Sony Xperia 1 V camera specifications leak: Good news for sensor size enthusiasts but bad news for MP count lovers

It seems every year there are a few rumors that start appearing claiming the latest Xperia 1 model will come with an MP boost to 48 MP for at least one of its cameras, and it never happens. This was suggested for 2022’s Sony Xperia 1 IV and the same has been mentioned for the 2023 Mark V model of the Xperia 1 line. But a new, and particularly sketchy rumor, has allegedly revealed some of the camera specifications for the Sony Xperia 1 V and there is no 48 MP sensor in sight. The leak apparently comes from Weibo via SumahoDigest, but it is quite believable as there is nothing mentioned that looks spectacularly outlandish.

So, devotees of high MP counts will be displeased to hear that all four cameras of the Sony Xperia 1 V will purportedly sport 12 MP sensors, just like the Xperia 1 IV. However, sensor size afficionados will be scoffing at those almost meaningless figures, as it appears there is good news for those who prefer a larger sensor to let in that all-important light. The same source says that the 2023 Xperia 1 will come with a main wide-angle camera with a decently sized 1/1.4-inch sensor, while there is a 1/2.5-inch unit headed for the ultra-wide-angle camera. This leaves the telephoto camera with a 1/2.9-inch sensor and the front-facing shooter is fitted with a nifty 1/2.4-inch sensor.

These numbers compare favorably with the 2022 predecessor, which offered good photography results in our test and was brilliant for video shooting. The Xperia 1 IV was loaded with 1/1.7-inch (wide), 1.25-inch (ultra-wide), and 1/3.5-inch (telephoto) sensors for the main camera system while the selfie camera had a 1/2.9-inch sensor. So, as one source exclaims how the Sony Xperia 1 V will get four new sensors, it appears it will actually be three (ultra-wide stays at 1/2.5), which is still quite an improvement considering this is Sony and that the 2023 Xperia 1 is only expected to be a subtle upgrade over the 2022 Xperia 1 as opposed to a completely new device.
