Google Fitbit Air now recognizes 10x more workouts, gets metal band

Alongside the launch of the brand-new Fitbit Edge Google also announced news for users of the Fitbit Air ($99 on Amazon). Google is now offering a Metal Mesh band for Fitbit Air, available now in Gold or Silver for $69.99 each. In addition, Google is improving the wearable through a firmware update.
The major new feature is that 100 different workouts can now be detected automatically, instead of just ten as before. In addition to running, cycling and walking, Fitbit Air can now also detect tennis, strength training, swimming and various team sports, among others, without users first having to manually select the relevant workout in the Google Health smartphone app. Detection is also said to be significantly more reliable now.
Google now also uses contextual data, such as the user's location, workout routines and historical data, which is intended to halve the number of undetected workouts. By default, a workout is only recorded if it lasts at least 15 minutes, but the minimum duration can be adjusted in the app. If workouts are manually adjusted in the app afterwards, Google Health is said to learn from this and recognize them better in the future.
This improved workout detection is available not only to Fitbit Air users, but also to customers who use a Pixel Watch or a Fitbit Edge. Starting next year, it should also be possible to sync data between Google Health and Flo Health, while the integration of MyFitnessPal for nutrition tracking is set to be expanded.
