Google unveils Fitbit Edge with GPS, ECG and AMOLED display

Google Fitbit Edge is intended to bridge the gap between the affordable Fitbit Air and the expensive Pixel Watch. The result is a $180 fitness tracker with an AMOLED touchscreen that should make it significantly easier than on the Fitbit Air to start different workouts directly from your wrist, without having to rely on automatic detection or reach for your smartphone.
The 1.34-inch AMOLED panel supports an always-on function, allowing the time to be displayed around the clock, though this is likely to negatively affect battery life. Google advertises a battery life of up to seven days. The 65 mAh battery weighs just 1.35 grams, while the aluminum case, which is water-resistant to 5 ATM, weighs 17.7 grams in total without the strap.
A major advantage of Fitbit Edge over most bands without a display is its integrated GPS module, which allows the distance covered while running or cycling to be recorded even without a smartphone. In addition to a heart rate and SpO2 sensor, Google also includes a skin temperature sensor and an ECG. Smartwatch functionality is limited, but Fitbit Edge can at least display incoming notifications, control music playback on the connected smartphone, and set alarms and timers.
Pricing and availability
Google Fitbit Edge is now available to preorder for $179.99 on Amazon with shipping expected to begin on October 27. Fitbit Edge is offered in silver, gray, gold and black.
