Earlier this year, ASUS hinted that it would release a second-generation gaming handheld in 2024. According to a fresh report, the new model will contain incremental hardware revisions with no APU upgrade in sight.

Speculation has begun about the changes that ASUS could bring to a successor to the ROG Ally (curr. $599.99 on Amazon). For reference, the company has already confirmed its intentions to release a second-generation ROG Ally, tentatively called a ROG Ally 2 for now. As we discussed in January, ASUS India's Vice President outlined the following when talking to Techlusive:

…we most likely will launch a second generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming.

More recently, ASUS delivered various improvements for its current gaming handheld, including AMD Fluid Motion Frames support. Additionally, the company announced a resolution for SD card failures that have been occurring on some ROG Ally units, as well as a warranty extension for devices purchased in North America. According to VideoCardz, a '2024 model would seemingly have the SD card issues fixed'.

However, it has not provided any evidence to qualify this assertion. Likewise, it believes that the ROG Ally 2 will arrive with Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme APUs, which already power the existing ROG Ally. Moreover, the website thinks that the next ROG Ally will be more of a refresh than a true ROG Ally 2.

Consequently, it refers to the next ROG Ally as the 'ROG Ally 2024', not the ROG Ally 2. As far as we can tell, VideoCardz's claims hinge on what it has 'gathered so far' from unknown media sources that it 'only started reaching out to...this week'. Allegedly, the website expects to receive more details on the ROG Ally 2024 'in the coming weeks' before a reputed Computex 2024 showcase, which is scheduled to run between June 4 and June 7.
