Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 laptop review: Small but important changes over last year's model
![Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640](fileadmin/_processed_/1/5/csm_PXL_20240621_0212232272_069c1d10a6.jpg)
The befittingly named Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 supplants the 2023 Inspiron 16 Plus 7630 with new AI-ready processors instead of last year's Raptor Lake-H options. Other than a few other minor changes inside and out, the model is largely identical to its predecessor and so we recommend checking out our review on the Inspiron 15 Plus 7630 to learn more about the physical features of the Inspiron 15 Plus 7640.
The Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 comes in many configurations ranging from the 13th gen Core i7-13620H to the 14th gen Core Ultra 9 185H, integrated UHD or Arc graphics to the discrete GeForce RTX 4060, and 1200p or 1600p display options. AMD Zen 4 SKUs with the Ryzen 5 8540U or Ryzen 7 8840U are also available albeit only for the regular Inspiron 16 7640 non-Plus model with no discrete graphics or 1600p option. Our test unit is an upper-end configuration with the Core Ultra 7 155H, 1600p display, and RTX 4060 graphics for approximately $1300 retail.
Competitors include other midrange 16-inch multimedia laptops like the Asus VivoBook Pro 16, Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 16IML9, or the HP Envy 16 series.

Case — More And Bigger Vents
The model gets a new dedicated Co-Pilot key which replaces the Ctrl key on the right half of the keyboard. The palm rest area is flatter, the perimeter of the base is rounder, and the ventilation grilles along the rear and sides have been redesigned to be bigger than before. Chassis materials and ports are otherwise unchanged for similar first impressions and dimensions.

Maintenance
Opening up the system shows one major difference between it and its immediate predecessor: support for a secondary M.2 2230 SSD. Otherwise, everything else appears to be mostly identical to the Inspiron 16 Plus 7630 as shown by the images below.
Display — FHD+ And QHD+ Options
Two display options are available as follows:
- 1920 x 1200, 60 Hz, Touchscreen, Glossy
- 2560 x 1600, 120 Hz, Non-touchscreen, Matte
Our unit comes with the bolded panel above. Note that the official Dell product page incorrectly lists 60 Hz for the 1600p panel as of this writing; we can confirm that this panel supports native refresh rates of 120 Hz and 48 Hz with no G-Sync support much like on last year's Inspiron 16 Plus 7630.
Interestingly, Dell has swapped panel providers from LG Philips to AU Optronics for this year's Inspiron 16 Plus 7640. The newer panel provides faster response times to minimize ghosting while offering similar sRGB colors, brightness levels, and contrast ratios as before.

* ... smaller is better
The display comes well-calibrated out of the box which is surprising given that the Inspiron series is typically more budget-friendly with less of a focus on color accuracy than the higher-end XPS series. Attempting to calibrate the panel ourselves would result in just slight improvements to average deltaE values as shown by the screenshots below. An end-user calibration is therefore not necessary for most users.

Performance — AI-Ready
Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below.
Processor
Our Core Ultra 7 155H performance is excellent with multi-thread results that are 15 to 20 percent faster than other laptops with the same processor. When compared to the Core i7-13700H in last year's Inspiron 16 Plus 7630, however, the newer CPU is only about 10 percent faster to be mostly unnoticeable for the vast majority of tasks. In fact, the older CPU appears to have a slight advantage when it comes to single-threaded workloads.
Of course, the Core Ultra 7 155H wild card lies in its integrated NPU which should come in handy for AI-accelerated tasks once they become more readily available. Its usefulness is otherwise extremely limited at the time of writing.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 3.2 GHz average, 97 W, and 101 C lasting for about 25 seconds when initiating Prime95 stress. Thereafter, it would drop to ~2.3 GHz and 44 W in order to maintain a cooler core temperature of 83 C. Turbo Boost performance is therefore short-lived on the system similar to what we observed on the predecessor model.
The Nvidia GPU would stabilize at 2070 MHz, 76 C, and 60 W when running Witcher 3 compared to 2250 MHz, 72 C, and 69 W on last year's model under similar testing conditions. These results complement the generally slower performance in games as detailed in the Gaming Performance section below. GPU power on the new Dell model would hit a 60 W ceiling compared to 70 W on the older Dell model even when set to Performance mode.

GPU Performance
Nvidia GPU options remain the same with GeForce RTX 4050 and 4060 options. 3DMark results are a few percentage points higher than before, but this unfortunately does not translate to actual gaming performance.
Downgrading to the RTX 4050 is expected to impact performance by just 10 percent. Opting for no discrete graphics at all will impact performance much more significantly by 60 to 80 percent.

System Noise — Loud When Gaming
The internal fans are able to remain quieter for longer than on last year's model. When running 3DMark 06, for example, fan noise would hover around 29 dB(A) through the end of the first benchmark scene whereas the Inspiron 16 Plus 7630 would get much louder at 35 dB(A). The two laptops will otherwise stabilize at over 50 dB(A) each when running more demanding loads like games over a longer period of time.

Energy Management
Power Consumption
Power consumption is noticeably lower than on last year's model when idling on desktop which can explain the generally longer battery life in the next section below. The system would demand between 4 W and 16 W compared to 16 W to 21 W on the Inspiron 16 Plus 7630. Consumption when running more demanding applications like games is otherwise nearly the same if not slightly lower by a few watts.
Interestingly, the model ships with a universal 130 W USB-C AC adapter (~14.3 x 6.5 x 2.2 cm) instead of the 130 W proprietary AC barrel charger that came with last year's model. The barrel AC adapter port remains, however, meaning you can still recharge the system via a compatible barrel charger. We're able to record a temporary maximum draw of 138 W when running Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously.

Battery Life
Runtimes are much longer than before likely due to optimizations and the switch to a newer generation Intel CPU. We're able to record a real-world WLAN battery life of almost 13.5 hours compared to 9.5 hours on last year's model.
Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 2 hours with the included USB-C adapter.

Verdict — Patching Up Some Small Holes
While the 2024 Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 may look a lot like the 2023 version, it brings enough to the table beyond the expected yearly processor upgrade that interested buyers may want to be aware of. The newer model supports up to two SSDs, offers faster black-white and gray-gray response times, longer battery life, and AI acceleration. These under-the-hood changes matter for enthusiasts who value storage expansion, fast-paced gaming, traveling, and AI-assisted programs like Co-Pilot. The Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 becomes a no-brainer over its predecessor in this regard.
The Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 addresses some of the disadvantages of its predecessor to be an even better multimedia machine than before. Single-thread CPU performance and gaming performance, however, take a tiny step backward.
Unfortunately, gaming performance takes a hit with the new model as most games tend to run a bit slower than before. Hardcore players may find that disappointing, but the deficit shouldn't be enough to deter casual players for which the Inspiron series was designed for. Gamers who really want to squeeze more performance out of their laptops will have to consider larger and pricier models like those from the Dell G16 series, Asus Zephyrus G16 series, or Razer Blade 16 series where TGP can often reach triple digits.
Price and Availability
Our Core Ultra 7, RTX 4060, and 1600p review configuration is currently shipping directly from Dell for $1300. Meanwhile, the lower-end Core i7 with UHD Graphics SKU starts at just $900.
