Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake shown on PC
Some PC gamers are experiencing a modernized Zelda N64 classic a day ahead of its release date. The Ocarina of Time remake is functional in the Lichii Switch 2 emulator. Exploits like the ns2jb jailbreak led to game dumps and the PC footage, but performance is inconsistent.

A Switch 2 jailbreak has already made games like Mario Kart World playable on PCs. However, Nintendo may be more concerned by the most recent development. Even before the Zelda: Ocarina of Time release date arrives, multiple clips show the remake running on desktops.

In one example, a social media poster (not linked here) shared Ocarina of Time footage from the Lichii Switch 2 emulator. Performance is far from optimal, with regular stuttering and frame rates varying from 20 to 60 fps. Colors are also so washed out that Link is often barely visible. On the other hand, the audio quality is impressive, and background music plays uninterrupted.

Although hackers haven’t achieved a full kernel exploit, progress in the homebrew scene has been rapid. Attracting attention, the ns2jb jailbreak attacks a vulnerability in the console’s file system. Hackers can then modify current-gen titles or produce game dumps. In addition to the gameplay captured on PC, individuals have datamined files from the Ocarina of Time remake.

Switch 2 piracy looms

The newer Lichii emulator has direct roots in previous-gen apps such as Yuzu, which fueled a thriving Switch piracy scene. So far, Nintendo has avoided a similar scenario, but that may be changing. Besides Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza is another first-party target that has become accessible on other platforms.

The difference is the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is being emulated ahead of its November 5th release date. Some retailers shipped the physical game early or allowed premature pickups, resulting in leaks. While pre-order sales appear record-setting, it remains a critical time to earn revenue. Regardless, until optimized, its lackluster PC performance will keep many players loyal to the handheld.

Nintendo may have taken subtle steps to clamp down on the Switch 2 jailbreak. Likely because it served as an entry point to the ns2jb exploit, the company removed SmileBASIC 4 from the eShop. Most recently, rumors suggest retailers are recalling the Civilization 7 cartridge. The original Switch title gave rise to a userland access exploit known as CivSwitch.
