The next Black Myth: Wukong? Highly anticipated action-RPG game makes close to $20M on Steam before release
Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to release in exactly four weeks, on October 28. The martial arts-focused action-RPG game is one of the most anticipated games of the year and already looks set to be a commercial success, in light of new information.
As revealed by Alinea Analytics, even though Phantom Blade Zero is still a month away from launch, it's already made close to $20M from Steam pre-orders. To be exact, the upcoming Chinese action game is said to have 386K pre-orders on Steam, bringing in $18.5M in the process.
Those numbers are identical to another big action title from earlier this year: Crimson Desert. Three days before it released, the same source estimated Crimson Desert had 363K pre-orders from 2.2M Steam wishlists. Phantom Blade Zero currently has 2.4M wishlists on Steam, placing it at a similar 16% wishlist-to-pre-order conversion rate on that platform.
That, of course, counts as stellar news for S-Game, the studio behind Phantom Blade Zero. After all, Crimson Desert went on to sell over six million copies within three months of its release. While Phantom Blade Zero would be considered a huge success if it matched those numbers, there's a sense that it could do even better, thanks to the Chinese market.
Parallels have long been drawn between the upcoming Wuxia game and 2024's global sensation, Black Myth: Wukong. That game was similarly built by a Chinese studio, Game Science, in the same genre, and has gone on to sell over 30M units worldwide. Phantom Blade Zero is unlikely to near those gargantuan numbers, as it lacks the appeal of the Journey to the West mythos that backed Black Myth: Wukong, but it'll be interesting to see how it performs regardless.
