While a ton of games have taken a crack at the “Souls-like” genre, only a few, if any, have reached the highs of Nioh. Released in 2017, Team Ninja’s brutal action RPG (ARPG) is a mesmerizing amalgamation of challenging melee combat, an intricately layered combat system, a fantastical story, and smart level design.
So, if you are a fan of the Japanese action RPGs with a deep combat system or just someone who’s a fan of the Souls-like genre, Nioh is well worth playing.
You can get Nioh: Complete Edition for just $7.49 on Steam. This is the lowest price ever for the game (linked at the end).
Nioh: Complete Edition on sale consists of the original campaign and two post-launch DLC: Dragon of the North, Defiant Honor, and Bloodshed's End.
Nioh’s combat is nearly perfect
Nioh tells the story of an Irish-born sailor named William Adams who is chasing after Edward Kelley, an alchemist who has captured Adams’ guardian spirit, Saoirse, and escaped to 15th-century feudal Japan. The chase transforms William Adams from a sailor to a prolific Samurai adept at killing demons.
Killing demons is what you’ll be doing the most in Nioh, as combat is the main focus of the game. The entire game design is there to support the incredible combat system that is brutal and intricate.
Like Dark Souls, players will be engaging in challenging enemy encounters that necessitate perfectly timed parrying, attacking, and evasive movements. However, the game also borrows from games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, as players can perform combos using different stances. Linking together stances allows players to perform attacks that deal differing levels of damage at various speeds.
Adding another layer to this system is the introduction of the “Ki” system for both players and enemies. Players must manage their stamina or “Ki” during combat.
Finally, Nioh also has Ninjutsu, Onmyo magic, and Living Weapons that add more variety to the melee combat. Players can also collect loot to upgrade/buy gear and upskill their character.
Add in unique enemies, memorable boss fights, and purposefully constrained levels, Nioh’s combat, according to Easy Allies’ review linked below, is “utterly rewarding”.
Nioh system requirements
Steam lists the “Recommended” system requirements for Nioh as follows:
- An Intel Core i7-4770K or better
- An Nvidia GeForce 1060 6 GB or better
- 80 GB of storage space
- 8 GB of RAM
Since Nioh is a fast-paced action RPG focused on intense combat, the game is best enjoyed at 60 FPS or more. So, gamers will be best served with modern low-to-mid-range internals like an RTX 3060 or an RX 6600 GPU.
