GTA 6 map is bigger than thought, with more interiors explorable on release date

Rockstar Games had already said the GTA 6 map would be about twice the size of GTA 5. However, a new Edge Magazine interview with the studio suggests Leonida is even larger than anticipated. Followers also gain insight into building interiors and how much of the open world will be accessible on the November 19th release date.
Simon Parkin talked to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson for 90 minutes. Although Nelson guided Jason and Lucia during the demo, the massive scope of Vice City and the adjacent areas becomes clear. According to Parkin, its landmass is “nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5, and RDR 2 combined”.
It’s debatable how Rockstar compared the landmass sizes of the past games to its latest crime epic. Regardless, players can spend countless hours just traversing the GTA 6 map. The GTA VI O’Clock podcast shared additional details confirming that fans can start exploring right away.
Like GTA 5, gamers won’t need to complete missions to visit distant destinations on the GTA 6 release date. Still, developers are aiming for an even more sandbox-type experience. The gameplay session with Rob Nelson showed how easily players can get distracted by a dense Vice City.
Insight into interiors
One way Jason and Lucia can become preoccupied is by entering homes. Co-development lead Aaron Garbut explained the GTA 6 map boasts “an order of magnitude more interiors” than previous titles. Each home has a unique feel, with signs of NPCs and families inhabiting the dwellings. Garbut remarked how he continues to find new buildings to inspect.
The Edge Magazine feature adds new screenshots highlighting various regions of the open-world. That’s welcome news for the mapping project, an interactive resource based on images, trailers, and leaks. Unfortunately, while the Vice City Collection includes a Leonida chart, it’s unclear whether Rockstar will bundle a similar extra in Xbox and PS5 cases.
