The Canon PowerShot G7 X may soon have a successor.
The PowerShot G7 X Mark III, Canon's flagship compact camera from 2019, could have a successor in just a few months. According to rumors, the compact camera will feature a brand-new design, an even larger sensor, and a fast zoom lens.

After initial rumors about Canon’s next-generation flagship compact camera surfaced in April, CanonRumors has now uncovered some new information about the presumed successor to the 2019 PowerShot G7 X Mark III. And there’s good news: it’s reportedly not just a reissue of the seven-year-old compact camera, but an entirely new development.

The camera is said to have very little in common with the PowerShot G7 X Mark III. Canon is reportedly using a stacked CMOS sensor that is larger than the one in the PowerShot G7 X Mark III but smaller than the one in the PowerShot V1 ($849 on Amazon) – that is, between the 1 inch and 1.4 inch formats. This sensor is reportedly paired with a fast zoom lens, though no further details regarding the lens’s technical specifications are available yet. For context: The PowerShot G7 X Mark III was equipped with a 24–100 mm f/1.8–2.8 zoom lens, while the newer PowerShot V1 uses a slower 16–50 mm f/2.8–4.5 lens.

Compared to earlier rumors, the timeline has shifted, as Canon is now reportedly planning a launch between late 2026 and early 2027, with the camera set to be officially unveiled by the end of February at the latest. With a price tag of less than $1,000, this compact camera is not intended to compete with flagship models such as the Panasonic Lumix L10 or the Leica D-Lux 8, but primarily with the Sony RX100 series. At the same time, Canon is also said to be developing a more affordable entry-level compact camera.
