Asobi: Remote Play overcomes many limitations of Sony’s first-party programs. Reducing reliance on PS5 consoles, the app offers PS Portal features like cloud streaming of purchased games. The new version 1.0 works on the Steam Deck, Windows handhelds, and PCs.

One advantage of the PlayStation Portal is its ability to cloud stream an expanded selection of PS5 games. With a PS Plus Premium subscription, players don’t need a console to use the feature. The Asobi: Remote Play app mimics the Sony handheld, bringing the capability to the Steam Deck and Windows devices.

What's new in 1.0

After debuting on the Apple platform in 2025, a playtest for Asobi arrived on Valve’s marketplace in August. While the program showed promise, version 1.0 introduces new perks. Most notably, it supports Windows at launch. That means handhelds and PCs running Microsoft’s OS can also access more PS4 and PS5 titles.

The PS Portal provides two ways to take PlayStation gaming on the go. Remote Play lets audiences enjoy games installed on consoles, but they need to own the system. Sony added cloud streaming in late 2025, which doesn’t rely on increasingly expensive hardware. PS Plus Premium enables subscribers to play options they already purchased that aren’t normally available.

Sony released Windows software that offers some of the same benefits. Unfortunately, it’s not compatible with the Linux-based Steam Deck and Steam Machine. In addition, the number of streamable candidates is more limited than with the Portal and Asobi.

The program has a straightforward interface, divided between Remote and Cloud tabs. Players must log in to PS Plus to see the full list of PS4 and PS5 games. The free version includes basic DualSense functionality. Meanwhile, the paid $8.99 upgrade unlocks haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 4K/60fps cloud streaming. Flow frame generation in version 1.0 smooths out choppy visuals.

Too many bugs?

Steam reviews are off to a mostly positive start, though some connectivity problems have been reported. The developer has pledged to update the app to address any issues.

As Asobi targets handheld competitors, Sony may soon give gamers new reasons to buy a PlayStation Portal. Recent FCC filings suggest the rumored OLED upgrade is closer to a reveal.
