Xperia 1 VIII glowing camera rings teaser: Nothing Phone-inspired design, notification LED, or just marketing?
CheckMag
As the May 13 launch approaches, official Sony teasers for the Xperia 1 VIII hint at a "full circle" design with illuminated camera modules. But is the glowing camera design a real rival to the Nothing Phone, or simply a marketing campaign?Martin Filipov 👁 Published 🇪🇸 🇵🇹 ...
We saw our first Sony Xperia 1 VIII leaked renders back in April, and at the time, the square camera island redesign looked bold enough to make heads turn. However, with Sony officially confirming the Xperia 1 VIII launch for May 13, we can't ignore the prominent glowing camera rings appearing in every teaser image and video shared by the Japanese tech giant.
Although Sony isn't particularly known for its smartphones anymore, the PlayStation maker maintains a small but loyal fanbase willing to go the extra mile when speculating about the redesigned flagship.
Ironically, we featured a glowing camera thumbnail in one of our news pieces on the Xperia 1 VIII right before Sony’s own official teasers surfaced - leaving us wondering if we accidentally predicted the future. The answer is… probably not. That said, what’s the whole "glowing camera rings" thing all about?
"Full circle" Sony Xperia 1 VIII teasers: Are the glowing camera rings a (real) Nothing-inspired design element, or just marketing?
Now, there are a few possibilities regarding Sony’s teaser images and videos :
- Sony’s big secret: The first option is that the Xperia 1 VIII indeed features glowing camera rings that Sony has managed to hide from the world - a feat that is possible but increasingly difficult with social media being what it is.
- Notification LED: The next possibility is that the Xperia 1 VIII features "hidden" lights around the lenses that are subtle enough to be missed in renders. In this scenario, Sony may be looking to bring back the notification LED - a beloved feature most Android phones abandoned years ago.
- Marketing: The third guess is that glowing rings are purely a creative marketing choice, not representing a physical hardware feature.
Sony's teasers mention the Xperia 1 VIII going "full circle", which can be interpreted in several ways. It could signal a return to "aggressive" camera hardware, or it could mean the revival of classic features like the notification LED, which has recently seen a comeback via Nothing Phone's "Glyph" interface.
As mentioned, the Xperia 1 VIII renders and leaked marketing images seen so far don’t suggest the presence of hardware-based light rings, and the idea of Sony keeping such a distinctive feature entirely under wraps is hard to believe. But not impossible.
Fortunately, with the official launch scheduled for May 13, we won't have to wait much longer before Sony sheds some light on the subject. Apparently, the camera rings are hiding a new 48MP 1/1.56-inch periscope zoom camera, dropping the continuous zoom from the Xperia 1 VII. Could the lightshow be a consolation prize?
