Mercedes-Benz has recalled around 14,912 EVs in the US following the appearance of an issue with the battery management system software. The recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ID of 24V372 is said to affect 30 SKUs of EVs like the Mercedes-Benz EQE, EQE SUV, AMG EQE, AMG EQE SUV, and more of model year 2023 and above.
According to the NHTSA recall notice, the recall is due to faulty battery management software which “may cause the high-voltage battery to shut down, which can result in a sudden loss of drive power.” This sudden loss of drive power can result in an accident as the issue can creep up during driving. InsideEV explains that the battery management software could potentially cut power to the wheels after being unable to handle diagnostic requests from different control units.
While the problem reportedly resolves after a restart, it could show up without any notice on the instrument cluster. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz will issue letters to owners of recalled EVs starting July 23 2024 after which they can head over to a dealer and get the battery management software updated free of cost.
