Verdict: Strong upgrade with some weird decisions
This second version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, Lenovo's mainstream business laptop line, still has almost all of the strong points of the first model we reviewed. Of course, with the stronger processor and more premium screen, this model easily beats the first iteration in terms of performance and screen quality. Obviously, if you need more performance or a better screen, this is the version to get.
Weirdly, this configuration also makes some strange decisions, like the omission of a backlit function for the keyboard. And we are still puzzled why Lenovo does not use the bigger 75 Wh battery more - it seems the only way to get it is to customize the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 with it. Lenovo makes it unnecessarily hard to get the best version of this laptop.
All in all, though, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 with Intel Panther Lake is an excellent choice for a mainstream business laptop, with both versions that we tested earning a "very good" rating.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
The version as tested is not readily available in the US market, as Lenovo limits the available configurations to Panther Lake CPUs with eight cores there. As our review unit is configured, with the Intel Core Ultra 7 365 instead of the Core Ultra 7 366H, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 costs around $3,575 over at lenovo.com.
Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
In terms of the design, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 we are testing is almost identical to the entry-level version we tested earlier. One curious difference: Today's review unit is not equipped with a backlit keyboard, and the keys have a slightly rougher texture because of that.

Display
While the first version of the Lenovo ThinkPd T14 Gen 7 we reviewed contained a very basic WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) IPS screen, our more expensive review unit uses the top-end option: A 14-inch 16:10 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) OLED screen.
This OLED screen is not only brighter, with an average brightness of 512 cd/m² instead of 404 cd/m², it is also faster, with a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz instead of 60 Hz (ex-factory, 60 Hz is enabled) and much faster response times. And of course, as an OLED panel, it offers incredibly deep blacks, strong color contrast and also covers a wide color gamut. Overall, this is an excellent panel, and it can even be used outdoor, since it is a matte version. It does use PWM to regulate brightness, though at least at an acceptable frequency of 600 Hz.

The display backlight flickers at 600 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) . The frequency of 600 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7572 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||
Performance
We described the different configuration options for the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 in our original review.
Testing Conditions
All benchmarks were performed in "Best Performance" mode, which results in sustained power limit (PL1) of 30 W and maximum power limit (PL2) of 65 W.
Processor Performance
The Intel Core Ultra 7 366H is a "Panther Lake" processor with a total of sixteen cores. Among them are four big P cores (up to 4.8 GHz), eight small E cores (up to 3.8 GHz) and four small low power E cores (up to 3.4 GHz). It is rated at a typical power consumption of 25 W, but can go up to 80 W. More comparisons with other CPUs are possible with our CPU comparison list.
Compared to the earlier ThinkPad T14 G7 model we tested, which featured a basic eight core Ultra 5 CPU, performance is hugely improved and on average 41 percent better. This is mostly due to the higher core-count, of course, but even in single core tasks, the Ultra 7 is around 10 percent faster. With the H class chip the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 is one of the fastest mainstream 14-inch business laptops.
Unfortunately, the CPU can not perform the same in battery mode, as performance is throttled by around 36 percent when running without a charger attached (13423 points in Cinebench R23).

GPU and Gaming Performance
The GPU is the same 4 Xe core model as in the lesser T14 G7 review unit. It is still slightly faster, probably thanks to a higher clock rate, but pales in comparison to the ARC graphics of the Core Ultra X7.

System Noise
Compared with the lower-end variant of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 G7, the maximum fan noise is slightly increased, from roughly 38 dB(a) to 40 dB(a). The fan noise under load is still less than the Dell Pro 5 14, which reaches 46 dB(a). In everyday office usage, the ThinkPad remains almost completely quiet.
We did not detect any coil whine with the T14 Gen 7 Intel.

Temperature
As with the fan noise, the temperatures are increased compared to the basic Core Ultra 5 variant. The maximum is increased from 38.6 degrees Celsius or 101 F to 43.2 degrees Celsius or 110 F, an increase of ten percent. Thankfully, this only applies to a hotspot on the bottom.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.5 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 34.4 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 43.2 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 36.5 °C / 98 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (34.3 °C / 93.7 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-6.7 °C / -12 F).

Speakers
Less loud, but more base: Compared with the Dell Pro 5, the user-facing speakers of the ThinkPad laptop deliver a surprisingly nice performance, as the sound may deliver less volume, but the sound is more balanced.

Power Consumption and Battery Life
Surprisingly, despite the higher resolution OLED panel, the power consumption of the T14 Gen 7 is not increased by a lot, with the increase mainly affecting the minimum idle value.
This leads to a good battery life performance of around 14 hrs in our Wi-Fi/websurfing test (150 cd/m²). Both T14 G7 models use the same internal 60 Wh battery - why Lenovo does not use the bigger 75 Wh battery for this high-end model is a mistery to us.

This is how Notebookcheck is testing
Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity. Further information on our test methods can be found here.
