OpenTS3, a mod currently in development, aims to upgrade The Sims 3 to a 64-bit engine, removing its 4GB RAM limit while preserving original gameplay and compatibility with existing content. The project could improve performance, custom-content loading and support for modern hardware, but no release date has been confirmed.

Despite being widely regarded as one of the franchise's best entries, The Sims 3 has always been held back by technical limitations. Released in 2009, the game was designed to run on a maximum of two CPU cores and uses a 32-bit engine, restricting how much RAM it can access. These shortcomings have contributed to performance problems, slowdowns and crashes, particularly when players install large amounts of custom content.

A new project called OpenTS3 could finally address some of those longstanding problems. Currently in development, the mod aims to upgrade The Sims 3 to a 64-bit engine while retaining the original gameplay code and allowing players to use their existing installed content. One of its biggest advantages would be removing the 4GB RAM ceiling imposed by 32-bit architecture. This could make loading extensive collections of custom content considerably easier, alongside improvements to asset loading, responsiveness and overall performance.

The upgrade is also expected to deliver higher minimum frame rates and greater compatibility with newer operating systems and hardware. This would be particularly welcome for a game that has struggled to keep pace with modern PCs. However, OpenTS3 does not yet have a confirmed release date. Players interested in following its development can do so via the project's official website.
