Tesla has long used referrals to sell cars, but now it wants its own customers to sell Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to each other. The new program is aimed at people who already own a Tesla, and the reward is up to a year of free software or store credit.

Tesla has launched its first Full Self-Driving referral program, and it includes current subscribers or FSD owners as well.

The basic idea is that sharing a referrer link gives an eligible owner a one-month FSD (Supervised) trial. The referrer only gets paid if their friend, relative, or random acquaintance actually subscribes during that trial.

The benefits to get depend on how one acquired the FSD option. Subscribers receive one month of free FSD, while those who bought it outright get a $99 Tesla Credit they can use for whatever they need from Tesla.

Free FSD referral conditions

This means that not everybody can take part, as one must be a current subscriber or have purchased FSD outright. Owners running FSD through a one-year grant are left out and cannot refer anyone or receive a link, too. What is needed to receive the free FSD or credit benefits is a recent Tesla app that is version 4.62.0 or later.

The invitee has conditions to meet, too, as they must own a registered Tesla without owning FSD or have no paid FSD subscription in the past 12 months. Needless to say, they must have compatible hardware, as even HW3 vehicles are struggling with glitchy FSD 14 Lite edition now, let alone older Tesla cars. Owners who got a trial with a new car cannot receive a referral link for at least 12 months after that trial ends.

Tesla has added a few limitations to keep the first FSD referral program from getting out of hand. Referrers can collect benefits up to 12 times per calendar year. Rewards sit as pending in the app until the grant date, and each one expires 12 months after that date. Credits are not a cash payout like in the recent Starlink referral program introduction either.

While they cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash, the benefits can cover Supercharging costs, a new vehicle, Tesla Shop orders, or various upgrades and subscriptions. In short, it's a low-cost way for Tesla to put FSD in front of owners who haven't tried it yet and a no-brainer for those self-driving option users to earn $1,200 or so a year to spend on all things Tesla. If they can find a dozen invitees to sign up in a given year, they are basically getting their Tesla to drive them around for free.
