EU’s more repair-friendly Switch 2 console and accessories have appeared in FCC records. The filings suggest buyers in other parts of the world will benefit from easier battery swaps. However, the handheld and controllers may have slightly weaker wireless connectivity.

Nintendo may be preparing to release its revised Switch 2 console and controllers outside of Europe. To comply with EU right-to-repair regulations, the hardware has easier-to-replace batteries. The handheld, Joy-Con 2, Pro Controller, and GameCube Controller have surfaced at the FCC, with some unexpected changes.

On social media, Nintendo Patents Watch highlighted the FCC filings. The updated Switch 2 console has a BEE-001(-01) label, matching the EU model number. Teardowns confirm that if battery life degrades, the part is less difficult to access and swap. That said, the account found tweaks that don’t seem focused on repairability.

Wireless alterations

Nintendo engineers installed new wireless antennas for WiFi and Bluetooth. According to the information, the 5 GHz WiFi band in particular may have a weaker signal. Conversely, Bluetooth connections to Switch 2 controllers could be stronger.

The gaming giant already revealed other modifications made to the European version of the handheld. Battery capacity is about 1% smaller, and the system weighs 10g more than its predecessor. Even so, as with the antennas, owners are unlikely to notice a significant performance difference.

New Nintendo controllers

Spotted at the FCC, the revamped Joy-Con 2 could ship with the new console. These accessories and the latest Pro Controller have also seen minor changes in signal strength. Nintendo’s website indicates battery life should remain identical with the slightly heavier Joy-Con 2. Meanwhile, the pro-grade option is 7g lighter but uses a 16% smaller battery.

Even the GameCube Switch 2 controller, designed for classic games, has been altered in response to EU right-to-repair rules. Patents Watch posted photos showing more common Phillips, rather than tri-wing, screws on the back of the device.

The FCC activity doesn’t guarantee the handheld and accessories will appear in the U.S. or elsewhere. Still, once stocks of the older products run out, the move could simplify manufacturing. Notably, the scarce Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console does not share the same battery revisions.
