Sony has now started distributing a feature-packed update for the PlayStation Portal. Rolling out globally, the update introduces various changes to the PS5 accessory, including the option of connecting to public Wi-Fi networks for the first time.

The PlayStation Portal has been around for a while now as the only official hardware that allows you to stream games from a PlayStation 5 (curr. $499 on Amazon) to a gaming handheld form factor. Ultimately, many shortcomings still exist, some of which are inherent to the device's underlying hardware. With that being said, Sony has sought to improve the PlayStation Portal in various areas with the device's latest software update.

For instance, it is now possible to connect the device to public Wi-Fi networks that require web browser authentication. However, Sony has not added a built-in web browser. Instead, a QR code will be displayed when connecting to a public Wi-Fi network that you must scan with a smartphone to complete the connection process. Please note that a 5 Mbit/s bandwidth is required to stream PS5 games, with Sony recommending a 15 Mbit/s connection for a smooth experience.

Moreover, Sony has introduced the option of showing the PlayStation Portal's remaining battery in percentage terms rather than only displaying one of three battery bar combinations. On top of that, the company has added new visual feedback to the Portal's touchpad areas, which sit within its 8-inch display. Meanwhile, Sony claims that the following games are the most popular so far since the Portal's release last November:

  • Astro's Playroom
  • EA Sports FC 24
  • Fortnite
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • Rocket League
