The new Smart #2 seems to have struck a chord with buyers. Just two weeks after orders opened, the Couture Edition, limited to 999 units across Europe, has already sold out. But why are customers rushing to buy an electric two-seater that most haven't even seen in person?

The Smart #2 made its debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 12. Pre-orders opened across Europe just one day later, with the Couture Edition limited to 999 units – and every single one has now been snapped up. The company confirmed the sellout in an official announcement on October 30. Considering that the Paris unveiling has so far been the only opportunity to see the compact electric city car in person, and that customers will have to wait until the second quarter of 2027 for the first deliveries, that's quite an impressive sales success. But what's driving the demand?

One major reason is likely the return of the classic Smart concept. In recent years, the manufacturer has introduced significantly larger vehicles with the #1, #3 and #5 models. With the new #2, Smart is returning to its roots for the first time since production of the fortwo ended in 2024: a genuine two-seat city car measuring less than three meters in length.

The #2 is considerably more compact than Smart's recent models, which may have contributed to the strong demand.

The new Smart #2 measures just 2.75 meters (9 feet) long and, with a turning circle of only 6.95 meters (22.8 feet), should feel right at home on narrow city streets. The electric two-seater is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 82 hp (60 kW) and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque. Its 35.8-kWh battery is expected to deliver a range of up to 290 kilometers (180 miles) under the WLTP cycle. DC fast charging is supported at up to 65 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80% in around 20 minutes under optimal conditions.

The limited edition's exclusivity likely also played a role in its sales success. Just 999 examples of the Couture Edition are available across Europe, featuring matte white paint, a gold-colored roof and matching wheels. Those who aren't particularly interested in the exclusive styling can still pre-order one of the three regular variants: Pure, Pure+ and Premium. Prices start at €19,990 (approximately $22,400), while the better-equipped versions cost at least €20,990 (around $23,500) and €24,490 (around $27,400), respectively. According to reports, demand for the other Smart #2 variants is also high, although no concrete sales figures have been released so far.
