Samsung: New, large display based on E Ink technology displays colors and communicates wirelessly

We frequently report on devices based on displays with electronic ink, such as e-readers. The technology offers a number of advantages: it can be read in bright environments without a backlight, and it only requires power when switching without lighting. Due to limitations in terms of switching time, such systems are primarily suited to the display of content that only needs to be updated relatively infrequently and at intervals of several seconds.

Such screens are now also used in professional contexts, such as in the form of digital price tags in stores. Depending on the system, these allow prices to be easily updated via a central computer system. The Samsung Color E-Paper (EMDX) is a new system based on e-paper, which is also suitable for digital signage applications, but on a large scale. 

The screen, which is based on the E Ink Spectra 6, measures 32 inches diagonally and offers a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440. A display of 60,000 colors is possible. At 17.9 millimeters, the model is quite thin and the weight of 2.9 kilograms should also allow it to be attached to suspended ceilings. 8 GB of storage is installed. Comms come in the form of WiFi and Bluetooth, and two USB-C ports are available.

The extremely low power consumption in particular is a focal point of Samsung's advertisements: when displaying static image content, this is less than 0.005 watts, although the image build-up and wireless data transmission then requires power. Here, the use of a rechargeable battery is conceivable.

Samsung is yet to announce a price, which is likely to be well into the four-digit range.
