HowToMen on YouTube has showcased Rabbit R1, the AI-powered gadget, running Android 13 almost natively. The integrated functions also work seamlessly on this mod. Additionally, it brings Google Gemini AI assistant, which is more useful than the one found in Rabbit OS.

The Rabbit R1 was one of the hyped-up AI-powered gadgets before it launched. But the hype soon dialed down after the company failed to meet the expectations. It was mostly because the device wasn’t as useful as many thought it to be, and most of the things that it does can be done with smartphones.

Speaking of which, the AI-powered gadget isn’t much different than a smartphone. As showcased by HowToMen on YouTube, the Rabbit R1 can smoothly run Android 13. The YouTuber notes that the installation process is pretty easy, which was kind of expected as the device’s original operating system, Rabbit OS, is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

What’s even more interesting is that the dedicated hardware buttons of the Rabbit R1 function seamlessly. For example, the scroll wheel can work like a volume rocker, while the press on the power button with the scroll wheel rolling downward takes a screenshot.

All the other hardware inside the so-called AI-powered device also works. That includes the camera, which the Android ROM even lets you face downward for better privacy, the microphone, and the SIM card. Worth noting that HowToMen couldn’t get calling to work on this modded Rabbit R1. But @MarcelD505 did show calling functions working with LineageOS installed.

Basically, this Android mod has made the Rabbit R1 more functional than it was. With Google Gemini, you can even get a better AI assistant than the one found in the Rabbit OS. If you want to give it a try on your R1, you can follow the guide called R1 Escape! found in GitHub.
