New RedMagic gaming phone launches with top-end Snapdragon SoC and 185Hz OLED display

RedMagic has officially launched its next-gen gaming phone with the latest performance-focused SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The new flagship smartphone has the same form factor as its predecessor, with a 6.85-inch display, but the brand claims the screen will be more immersive thanks to slimmer bezels.

Specifically, the RedMagic 12 Pro Plus is said to have 0.96mm screen bezels, an improvement over the 12.5mm bezels found on the predecessor. The corners are more rounded as well, which should lead to a comfortable grip during prolonged gaming sessions.

Speaking of which, the flagship SoC is paired with an active fan that can spin at up to 25,500RPM. Combined with the water cooling setup, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 should perform better than the competition on this phone, especially in extended heavy load sessions.

Getting back to the screen, the RedMagic 12 Pro+ has an 185Hz display, same as the OnePlus 16, which is another big improvement over the predecessor. It’s a BOE X11 OLED panel, and paired with other enhancements, the company says that the screen offers a smoother gaming experience than the last-gen device.

There’s an 8,400mAh battery under the hood, and it brings 120W fast charging support in wired mode (145W Ugreen 25K power bank curr. $79.99 on Amazon). It supports 80W wireless charging as well, and there’s support for bypass charging.

The RedMagic 12 Pro Plus is also the first phone from the company to feature a Dolby Audio dual-speaker setup. Among the other highlights are a dual-camera setup with a 50MP 1/1.55-inch OIS camera as the main sensor, 700Hz shoulder buttons, RGB lights on the back, and a flat screen with an under-display selfie camera.

In China, this new RedMagic gaming phone starts at CNY 6,499, about $971, and this price is for the configuration with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The top-end config with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage goes for CNY 8,499, about $1,270.
