The new Apple MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 laptops feature touch-sensitive Tandem OLED displays that Apple brands as "PROLED XDR". YouTuber Dave2D went hands-on with the new MacBook Pros and had a lot to say about the OLED panels.

After months of leaks and rumors pointing to MacBook Pro laptops with OLED displays, Apple has finally unveiled the new MacBook Pro 14 and the MacBook Pro 16. The biggest feature of the new MacBook Pro 14/16 is the new "PROLED XDR" display, a Tandem OLED panel that boasts 2,000 nits of peak brightness. Additionally, Apple has also brought touch support to the new MacBook Pro 14 and 16, making these the first Apple devices to feature the new input method. However, YouTuber Dave2D is torn on the feature’s usability.

Apple claims that it has optimized macOS for multi-touch input. Dave2D reports that this is indeed the case, as the macOS UI has, among other things, helpful animation changes to make touch navigation easier. However, Dave2D questions the usability of touch as a valid, helpful input source. He gives the example of video editing, where everything that you can use touch for can be accomplished more efficiently with a mouse/trackpad.

PROLED XDR display seems to be a fingerprint magnet

There is also the problem of fingerprints. The new MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 will be available with both a glossy and nano-texture display finishes. While the glossy finish will be a nightmare to keep free from fingerprints, Dave2D shows that the nano-texture display is also prone to this problem.

To be fair, this is a problem that plagues all touch-capable laptops. Dave2D reports that the fingerprint situation seems to be better than what the YouTuber was expecting. So, we’ll have to reserve judgment until we can test the new PROLED XDR display ourselves.

Finally, there are genuine use cases where touch input definitely makes a mountain of difference. For instance, developers who work on mobile apps can now directly test the UI functionality of their apps through the PROLED XDR touch display.

Stay tuned for our in-depth review of the new MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16. Until then, check out our launch coverage of the new laptops.
