NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 vs AMD Radeon RX 7900M vs AMD Radeon RX 7600S

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is a fast desktop graphics card. It is based on the GA106 Ampere chip and offers 12 GB GDDR6 graphics memory with a 192 Bit memory bus. It offers 3,584 cores and supports PCIe 4.0.

The performance is similar to the older GeForce RTX 2070 and therefore best suited for 1080p gaming of modern and demanding games in high settings.

The GA106 chip offers 3,840 FP32 ALUs of which half can also execute INT32 instructions (i.e. 1,920 INT32 ALUs). With Turing all shaders could still execute FP32 or INT32 instructions. The raytracing and tensor cores on the chip were also improved according to Nvidia. The Ampere chips also include an improved 5th generation video encoder (NVENC for H.264 and H.265) and a 7th generation decoder (for various formats now including AV1).

The GA106 chip is manufactured by Samsung in 8nm (8N), which is not quite able to keep up with the 7nm node at TSMC (e.g. used by AMD and also for the professional GA100 Ampere chip). The TDP of the RTX 3060 is specified at 170 Watt and therefore slightly higher than the previous RTX 2060 (160 Watt).

AMD Radeon RX 7900M

The AMD Radeon RX 7900M is a mobile upper high-end graphics card based on the Navi 31 chip (RDNA 3 architecture) manufactured in 5nm. It features 4,608 cores (72 CUs - compute units) and 16 GB of fast GDDR6 graphics memory connected with a 256 Bit memory bus. The chip also includes 64 MB Infinity Cache. The clock speed of the cores will depend on the laptop according to AMD. The specified game clock speed is 1825 MHz (most likely at 180 W TGP). 

AMD compares the performance to the mobile RTX 4080 and shows a number of games where the 7900M is on average 7% faster. Raytracing is supported in hardware, but usually slower than the Nvidia counterpart. Nvidia also has the advantage of DLSS support in selected games.

The Navi 31 chip is manufactured at TSMC in the current 5nm process. The power consumption (TGP) is specified at 160 to 180 Watt (200 Watt including SmartShift from the CPU).

AMD Radeon RX 7600S

The AMD Radeon RX 7600S is a mobile upper mid-range graphics card based on the Navi 33 chip (RDNA 3 architecture) manufactured in 6nm. It features 1,792 cores (28 CUs - compute units) and 8 GB of fast GDDR6 graphics memory connected with a 128 Bit memory bus. The chip also includes 32 MB Infinity Cache. The clock speed of the cores will depend on the laptop according to AMD. The specified game clock speed is 1865 MHz (most likely at 75 W TGP). The 7600S is the low power variant of the of the RX 7600M with lower clock speeds (-205 Mhz / -10%) and a lower power consumption (-15W / -17% TGP).

The performance should be slightly below the RX 7600M and therefore similar to the old RX 6650M XT (28 CUs RDNA 2, higher clock speed) and therefore best suited for 1080p gaming. Although the Raytracing performance did increase for RDNA 3, the GeForce GPUs are still faster in this regard.

The Navi 33 chip is manufactured at TSMC in the current 6nm process (versus 4nm of Nvidia RTX 4000 series). The power consumption (TGP) is specified at 50 to 75 Watt.
