Motorola’s first full-size foldable is making the competition nervous

Motorola knows a thing or two about flip phones: As early as the 2000s, the company launched the Motorola Razr, a classic clamshell phone—of course, without a touchscreen and with only rudimentary internet capabilities.

In recent years, this has evolved into the Motorola Razr series of clamshell smartphones, which have attracted attention for their unusual colors and materials.

Now Motorola has finally taken the plunge and launched a “classic” foldable smartphone: the Motorola Razr Fold. It currently costs around US$ 1,900 at lenovo.com. That’s a hefty price tag, so it certainly has to offer a lot, right?

Well, this phone features Pantone colors and a textured back, available in either Blackened Blue or Lily White. This gives the phone a sleek, high-end look, and in our review, we found the Razr Fold to be very sturdy. However, when unfolded, the two sides can slide against each other, causing a noticeable and audible reaction in the hinge.

Sturdy and IP-certified

Otherwise, we’re particularly impressed by the phone’s sturdy folding mechanism: The Razr Fold can be easily propped up in various positions and remains stable. This allows you to use it as a mini-laptop, with the keyboard displayed on the lower screen while content is shown on the upper screen.

Or you can set the phone up like a tent on your nightstand to display the time and calendar on the outer screen.

Uncertainties Regarding Updates

It’s a bit frustrating that while Motorola promises 7 years of updates—aiming to ensure long-term usability—the support section only mentions updates through 2030.

So there’s at least some uncertainty here, which certainly isn’t an incentive to buy for consumers looking for a long-term companion.
