ModRetro is targeting not just the Nintendo Game Boy Color fans with its first release, but also the Analogue Pocket and DIY efforts from the likes of Funnyplaying. Built around an FPGA chip and offering cartridge support, the ModRetro Chromatic is billed as being the most accurate modern recreation of a Game Boy Color to date.

Analogue has led the way in recent years in increasing the popularity of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips with devices like the Analogue Pocket (curr. $372 on Amazon). In short, FPGA chips are coded to hardware emulate a given system for a more accurate gaming experience than software emulation provides. Now, the founder of Oculus VR has announced the ModRetro Chromatic, which undercuts the Analogue Pocket by $50.

As such, the ModRetro Chromatic is pricier than Funnyplaying's DIY FPGA Game Boy Color clone that we covered earlier this year. At any rate, the ModRetro Chromatic consists of a 2.56-inch IPS display that resolves at 160 x 144 pixels, matching the Game Boy Color. Protected by sapphire glass, the display is said to get closer to accurately recreating the colour and movement characteristics of a Game Boy Color's display than the Analogue Pocket can.

Moreover, the Chromatic features PBT buttons and a magnesium alloy casing, within which also sits a 3.5 mm jack, a mono speaker and a link cable port. By default, the Chromatic runs off three triple-A batteries. However, ModRetro has included a USB Type-C port for topping up rechargeable batteries. Alternatively, the same port can be used to connect the device to an external display, although it is unclear whether Chromatic supports external controllers of any kind.

The ModRetro Chromatic is available to pre-order now for $199 in several colours on a 'first come, first served basis' with either English or Japanese lettering. Incidentally, pre-orders will ship with Tetris for Chromatic, one of several new games that ModRetro plans to release. On top of that, the Chromatic can be purchased alongside a pair of Koss Porta Pro headphones, which retail for $49. Currently, ModRetro hopes to begin shipping Chromatic pre-orders this Christmas.

Please note that ModRetro has buried punitive terms and conditions within its FAQ, some of which include:
