The MediaTek Kompanio series is back at Computex with a new variant touted to bring more AI power to Chrome OS-powered laptops via a dedicated NPU. The 838 is also touted to support modern form-factors that might still last a day at work or school on a single charge. It is also backed to allow a Chromebook to stream 4K over up to Wi-Fi 6E connections.

The Kompanio 838 will officially be part of MediaTek's Computex 2024 showcase in June. It is touted to augment upcoming Chromebooks from OEMs such as Acer, Lenovo or HP with features that might have been unthinkable for PCs of that category not that long ago.

They include the same up-to-date AV1 decoding as the Pentonic 800 for new TVs, to confer the option of 4K streaming on upcoming Chrome OS machines. The 838 also supports connection to an external display of the same resolution.

A new 838-based Chromebook is also backed to boost content and media in general with its on-board AI, thanks to the MediaTek NPU 650. It also allows for the integration of DDR4 or LPDDR4X RAM, while the chip's Imagiq 7-series ISP might support 2 cameras on the same device.

The octa-core Kompanio 838 is based on an aging 6 nanometer (6nm) architecture, yet is touted to get up to 66% more power out of its CPU (in benchmarks) and up to 76% more speed out of its GPU compared to its predecessor

It also upgrades to compatibility with Filogic platforms that support Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, thereby bringing a future potential Chromebook even more in line with more and more new Windows PCs.
