Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel Laptop Review: Small OLED workstation without endurance
![](fileadmin/_processed_/c/9/csm_DSC_0038_db962c1294.jpg)
With the new Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 with Intel Core Ultra, Lenovo has changed a great deal: for the first time, the smallest P ThinkPad has its own design. This results in interesting features and a bigger screen as well as a higher capacity battery, but also a bigger screen and a higher weight. Also, some options like the OLED screen have disappeared.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 on the other hand is still based on the ThinkPad T14 and thus more lightweight and mobile. In our review, we will take a look at the older model and if it still can be of interest with the successor already on the market.

Design: T14 chassis with aluminum bottom cover
The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel is still based on the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3, which came to the market in 2022. Part of the redesign back then was the 16:10 aspect ratio and a new dark-grey chassis - this is in contrast to the new ThinkPads, which return to the pure black design. The dark black paint does not look as high quality, but it is less susceptible to dirt and fat. A new design attribute is the reverse notch for the webcam. If you dislike this new design trait, an older model like the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 could be a good option, as it still lacks the webcam bump.
While the ThinkPad P14s G4 looks like the ThinkPad T14 G4, they are not identical. The ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel has a bottom cover out of aluminum, while the T variant uses reinforced plastic. The stability of the base unit is better here, it can barely be twisted. The palmrest has little flex, same with the keyboard - here the magnesium frame beneath helps. Without a metal reinforcement, the screen cover is somewhat more flexible, but still pretty robust.
The two small metal drop down hinges enable an opening angle of 180 degrees. One-handed opening is not possible.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel is not a thin laptop - Lenovo says that the chassis is 17.9 mm thick, but we have measured 22.7 mm. The weight sits at 1.45 kg, meaning our review device is roughly 150 g lighter than the new Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel. Compared with the Gen 5, the device is also less wide, but despite the bigger 14.5 inch display, the P14s G5 is not deeper. This is possible thanks to the smaller screen bezels.
Connectivity: Small workstation with optional WWAN
In comparison with the ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel, there are no big differences in terms of the connectivity options. The RJ45 Ethernet port here does not have a flap, which it does have on the P14s G5 Intel. Compared with the Dell Precision 5490, the P14s excels with its selection of legacy ports (2x USB-A, HDMI, RJ45), while the Dell is a USB-C only system. The HP's ZBook Firefly 14 G10 is a better fit in this regard, but HP does not include RJ45. A full size SD card slot is not present in any of these 14 inch workstation, though the Dell at least has a microSD slot.
Communication
Lenovo puts the Intel AX211 into the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4. Compared against the Qualcomm solution of the P14s G4 AMD, the Intel variant has higher and more stable transfer rates.
WWAN is not integrated from the get-go here, but LTE is upgradeable. The necessary antennas are in the place. The newer Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel completely omits this feature.
Webcam
The webcam has a resolution of five megapixels. In good lighting conditions, the picture is usable for video conferencing. Certainly, a modern smartphones can deliver much better pictures than the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel.

Security
Mobile workstations count under the business laptop label. For the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel, the result is a wide selection of security functions. Among them, we count the Kensington lock slot, a dedicated TPM chip, the smart card reader as well as the fingerprint reader and the infrared webcam for the fast log-in with Windows Hello. Also, the ThinkPad laptop has a physical webcam shutter for enhanced privacy.
Accessories
As the only accessory in the box, Lenovo includes a 100 W USB-C charger with the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel.
Maintenance
Different from the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 G4, the RAM here is completely soldered down. In contrast, the new ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel offers upgradeable memory. For the P14s G4, at least the M.2 2280 SSD is modular, though there is sadly only a single slot - especially for a workstation, a second SSD would be a great asset. The Wi-Fi module is soldered as well, though there is an open M.2 2242 slot for the WWAN module. Also, the screwed in battery can be easily changed and the cooling system cleaned. All of these components are accessible via the bottom cover, which is held down by seven screws and a few clips on the backside.
Very nice is the possibility to change the keyboard by just loosening two screws - the new P14s G5 Intel does not have this feature anymore.
Sustainability
Lenovo increasingly banks on sustainability as a marketing argument. With the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel, a few components are made out of recycled plastics. Also, the packaging is made out of compostable materials, too. As usual, Lenovo publishes a repair manual for its ThinkPads, the Hardware Maintenance Manual) and there are video tutorials, too. Via support.lenoov.com, parts are easy to order and over at compliance.lenovo.com, the CO₂ pollution that is incured during production is listed as well.
Warranty
Lenovo ships the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 with a three-year warranty. During the first year, premier support including on-site warranty is valid. Afterward, it turns into a standard bring-in warranty, which means the device has to be sent in. For an additional fee, the service can be extended to five years and extras like a longer battery warranty or on-site service can be added. Since this is a business model, the warranty is valid internationally, though here always only with bring-in service.
Input devices: known high quality ThinkPad keyboard
The input devices of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel are pretty much identical to those used in the other 2022 and 2023 ThinkPads. Beneath the comfortable backlight keyboard (two levels) with 1.5 mm travel, slightly concave Chiclet keys with a sensible layout, Lenovo places a classic mechanical clickpad (11.5 x 6 cm). It is made out of plastic and thus less high quality than some comparable glass trackpad, but we have nothing to complain about when it comes to usability. Alternatively, the red ThinkPad TrackPoint with its three dedicated keys is there, with the middle button for scrolling. The TrackPoint, which is made by ELAN in this case, functions flawlessly for mouse pointing and can be an excellent alternative to the touchpad.
It should be noted that the FN key is still the most leftward key on this ThinkPad keyboard, as was typical for ThinkPads thus far. With the new 2024 ThinkPads, Lenovo has switched the Ctrl and FN keys. If one is married to that particular arrangement, it might be a positive for the P14s G4.
Display: OLED panel with high quality, but also PWM
Different from the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel, where Lenovo employs the bigger 14.5 inch format, the PC manufacturer still uses the more common 14 inch size for the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel. The following 16:10 monitors are available:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 300 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 300 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, Touchscreen
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, PrivacyGuard
- 2.2K (2,240 x 1,400), IPS, 300 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 400 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-matte/semi-glossy, Dolby Vision HDR
The competitors all use IPS screens that can not compete with the OLED screen of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel in response times and contrast. While the P14s G4 AMD and HP ZBook Firefly 14 G10 both use lower resolution WUXGA LCDs, the Dell Precision 5490 contains a WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) display - this IPS panel (485 cd/m²) is the only one which beats the organic screen of the ThinkPad (432 cd/m²) when it comes to screen brightness.
Typical for an OLED screen is that Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is used for dimming it. The frequency of 360 Hz is not extremely low, but it can still sometimes lead to problems.
Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 360 Hz Amplitude: 25 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 360 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 360 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17629 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |

* ... smaller is better
The display is calibrated from the factory, a calibration with the X-Rite i1Pro 3 and iProfiler brings no improvement. Multiple color profiles are preinstalled, with the choice depending on the color gamut. We measured the sRGB and P3 profiles in addition to the default one. Lenovo's calibration is good, as the Colorchecker deltaE values of 1.2 and 1.4 are sufficiently low, indicating a high color accuracy.
Both the sRGB and P3 color gamut are covered by the OLED panel of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel. Even the AdobeRGB gamut is almost covered. This screen is well suited for working with colors.

Performance: Raptor Lake combined with Nvidia RTX A500
Lenovo sells the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel only with P28 CPUs of the Raptor Lake generation, with the Intel Core i5-1340P, i5-1350P, i7-1360P and i7-1370P as available options. The Iris Xe and Nvidia RTX A500 make up the GPU selection.
The choice of GPU influences the memory, as the dGPU models have soldered RAM, with 16, 32 and 64 GB LPDDR5X-7500 on board. Pure iGPU models have a single 16 GB DDR5-5600 module on board, plus an open SO-DIMM for up to 48 GB. As for mass storage, Lenovo puts in a single M.2 2280 SSD with up to 2 TB of capacity.
Test conditions
There are three different performance modes in the Windows settings, which influence the power limits of the processor (Power Limit 1 = performance under load, Power Limit 2 = short term performance):
- Best energy efficiency: PL1 22 W / PL 2 22 W
- Balanced: PL1 25 W / PL2 65 W
- Best performance: PL1 32.5 W / PL2 65 W
Processor
The Intel Core i7-1370P is the most powerful Raptor Lake chip of the P28 series. The only Raptor Lake P CPU with 14 cores, it has six big P cores (1.9 to 5.2 GHz) and eight E cores (1.4 to 3.9 GHz). For comprehensible comparisons with other CPUs, our CPU benchmark list is a great tool.
Despite the processor having more cores than the AMD chips in the ZBook Firefly 14 G10 and ThinkPad P14s G4 AMD, the ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel loses the performance comparison. However: The Raptor Lake chip can beat them when it comes to boost performance, but even here, the Dell Precision 5490 with its better cooling system wins out. Overall, the ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel does not deliver a bad performance, but also not a great one.
Instead of 14,000 points in CB23, the ThinkPad only achieves 10,000 points when in battery mode. This is a reduction of 28.5 percent.

The Nvidia RTX A500 is the entry level Ampere solution for professional users. It is a cut-down version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 and the first RTX GPU in the ThinkPad P14s. With a TDP of only 30 W and 4 GB GDDR6 memory, this is a very weak dedicated GPU, which is being replaced by the new Nvidia RTX 500 Ada in the ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel.
In the 3DMark benchmarks, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel clearly loses out to the Dell Precision 5490 with RTX 3000 Ada, which is to be expected. More interesting is the comparison with the two AMD workstations: While the AMD Radeon 760M of HP's ZBook Firefly 14 G10 is roughly 20 percent slower, the is performance parity with the Radeon 780M in the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 AMD. However, in the workstation test SPECviewperf, the situation changes, as the dGPU has the advantage here.

Gaming Performance
Gaming after work is a possibility, as the RTX A500 is sufficiently powerful to handle even some modern games. 4K gaming is not possible, and in some newer titles, the setting "High" is the most this GPU can handle.

Emissions: ThinkPad P14s gets hot
Noise
As a quite compact model, the cooling system of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel is quite constrained. Only one fan has to keep CPU and GPU temperatures in check. Even when idling, it becomes active sometimes, though it is inaudible here. Under load, the ThinkPad consistently reaches a noise level beyond 40 dB(a), no matter if under average load (profile: Balanced) or in the stress test (profile: Maximum performance). The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G10 has a similar noise level, with the AMD variant of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 running more quiet. Only the Dell Precision 5490 gets even louder, due to its more powerful GPU.
We did not detect any coil whine here.

Heat
A compact design, strong components, only one fan: This combination makes the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel a hot one. The upper right corner of the ThinkPad laptop gets very hot, with 55 degrees Celsius / 132 F above the fan outlet as the hotspot. The palmrest also gets toasty with up to 32 degrees / 90 F.
In the stress test, the limitation of the cooling system becomes apparent. CPU and GPU can only consume 40 W together, with both components being allotted 20 W. In the case of the GPU, this results in throttling.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 55.3 °C / 132 F, compared to the average of 38.2 °C / 101 F, ranging from 22.2 to 69.8 °C for the class Workstation.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 48.7 °C / 120 F, compared to the average of 41.2 °C / 106 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.3 °C / 83 F, compared to the device average of 32 °C / 90 F.
(-) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 40.1 °C / 104 F, compared to the device average of 32 °C / 90 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (33.1 °C / 91.6 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.8 °C / 82 F (-5.3 °C / -9.6 F).

Battery life
When you put a 14 core CPU, a dedicated GPU and an OLED screen together, the 52.5 Wh battery does not last for long. In the Wi-Fi test, we only achieved six hours, a weak result. With the dark mode forced in the browser, the battery life can be prolonged, but the results are still quite weak when compared with the other devices.

Verdict: ThinkPad workstation has some clear weak points
Due to the drastic changes that Lenovo implemented with 2024 ThinkPads like the P14s Gen 5 Intel, the 2023 variant Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel can be an interesting choice, even in 2024. It is a compact mobile workstation with clear strengths - and some definite weak points.
What the ThinkPad laptop does right: Offering very comfortable input devices in a robust design, which also has many ports and security options, even being WWAN upgradable. The user replaceable keyboard is a very nice and rare feature nowadays as well. At the same time, the reviewed version of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 offers a high quality OLED screen, which is ideal for users who need great colors. It is calibrated ex factory and the only weaknesses are PWM and the limitation to 60 Hz refresh rate. With the Nvidia GeForce RTX A500, the ThinkPad still has an advantage compared with pure iGPU models, bei it for the CUDA compatibility or higher performance in things like gaming or the CAD benchmark SPECviewperf.
The compact workstation starts to struggle when the CPU is concerned. The performance is not bad, but also not nearly good enough to beat the competition. The side effect of the P28 chip, which can consume more than 60 W: The chassis gets pretty hot and the single fan is not quiet either - with the Nvidia GPU not helping the ThinkPad in this regard. It is crystal clear that the P14s G4 is overwhelmed with cooling both components under load, as especially the dGPU is throttled in the stress test. Another weakness: The battery life of the ThinkPad is bad, with the OLED screen contributing to this. The below average speakers and the throttling in battery mode are two additional problems.
With WWAN and OLED, the ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel has interesting features, which are not present with the successor. The weaknesses concering battery life and the cooling system are self evident though.
The successor ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel is already available - with the stronger cooling system and newer, more efficient components as well as a bigger battery, the newer model seems to correct a lot of the issues the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel had. A review of the newer model is planned.
On the flip side, some options like WWAN and the OLED screen as well as the user replaceable keyboard disappear with the P14s G5. The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 Intel is Lenovo's last ThinkPad workstation, which combines all those features with an Nvidia GPU, appart from the giant ThinkPad P16. The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G10 has more efficient AMD chips, but it is missing the Nvidia GPU that some users need. The Dell Precision 5490 has a much stronger RTX GPU, but it lacks any legacy ports.
Price and performance
The ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel starts at €1,645 with the German reseller Campuspoint. Amazon.com offers a configuration of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 Intel for $1,451.
