Ledger says Atom can protect sensitive approvals even if its Android system is compromised. The device runs everyday apps, but a separate operating system takes over the screen when users need to approve an action. A physical switch also disconnects the cameras and microphones.

At its Op3n event on October 15, digital asset security company Ledger unveiled Atom, an Android device intended to accompany the phone you already use. It runs everyday apps and has its own 5G connection, though its eSIM supports mobile data only, leaving cellular calls and SMS to your main phone. Ledger positions Atom around private communications and secure approvals rather than replacing your everyday phone.

Atom has a 6.77-inch AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 3 protectio. As per The Verge, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Dragonwing processor instead of Snapdragon. A fingerprint reader is built into the power button, and the 4,000mAh battery is replaceable. For photography, it has a 50MP rear camera capable of recording 4K video at 60fps and a 32MP front camera. Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C are included for connectivity. Ledger says the device will receive five years of Android updates, with spare parts available for seven years after the last unit is sold.

Everyday apps run on a hardened version of Android built from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), with additional security protections. Sensitive approvals are handled by Ledger OS, a separate operating system running independently on its own Secure Element chip. When Secure Mode is activated, a hardware circuit disconnects Android from the display and touch controls, giving Ledger OS direct control of both. Access requires a dedicated Ledger OS PIN, separate from Android’s lock-screen PIN, and actions must be confirmed on the protected touchscreen. Ledger says Android cannot read that PIN or fake an approval, even if compromised. A protected strip at the top of the display, called the Secure Bar, shows when Ledger OS is in control.

Secure Mode also shuts down the cameras and microphones automatically, and a physical Privacy Switch lets users cut their power during ordinary use. Ledger also plans a messaging feature that encrypts text within Ledger OS before passing it to a third-party app, so the app never sees the readable message. Recipients would need another Atom to decrypt and read it in Secure Mode. For identity checks, the company is working with verification provider Persona to let users prove, for example, that they are over 18 without sharing more personal information than the service needs.

Ledger Wallet runs directly on Atom, letting users buy, sell and swap crypto and approve transactions on the same device. The private keys used to authorise those transactions remain inside the Secure Element running Ledger OS. A preinstalled Seeker app also provides access to more than 1,500 apps in the Solana dApp Store. Ledger Agent Intent also lets AI agents prepare transactions for review, with support for the OpenClaw agent platform and private AI service Venice AI. Any transfer still needs the user’s confirmation on Atom’s protected touchscreen.

The Secure Element has a Common Criteria EAL6+ certification, which assesses the chip’s resistance to physical tampering, probing and other attacks. Ledger says it can also receive future updates using cryptography designed to resist quantum-computer attacks. Atom includes protections intended to detect tampering with its secure components, display and back cover, alongside packaging designed to reveal whether it has been opened.

Ledger expects Atom to ship in summer 2027. Reservations for the $849 Founders Edition require a fully refundable $100 deposit, with the regular price set to rise to $899 after launch. The Founders Edition includes a $50 Bitcoin voucher, a Ledger Recovery Key backup card, a protective accessory and a privacy screen protector. Atom remains in development, and Ledger says app availability will be confirmed before shipping because it depends on certifications and licences.
