GoPro has announced that the "smallest and lightest" of its action camera line-up is now also capable of its widest-angle recording thanks to a new software update that confers a potentially vital crop setting on its 4K video menu. Furthermore, an additional SuperView Digital Lens setting is backed to make the same footage even more dynamic and dramatic with further aspect-ratio toggling.

The Hero is a 2024 GoPro action camera stripped of features such as a front-facing screen in order to weigh just 86 grams (g) and cost just $179 on Amazon, as opposed to $338.53 for its flagship counterpart the Hero 13 Black (and even then just because it is currently 15% off its typical $399.99 price).

Nevertheless, the company has updated its new entry-level variant to get the most out of its 4K-capable sensor with a new full-size 4:3 aspect-ratio that can be selected while filming.

GoPro asserts that it will make point-of-view videos all the more convincing and engaging, not to mention all the more social media-ready thanks to their taller nature.

For those who still prefer videos in "so insanely wide" 16:9, there is also a new SuperView Digital Lens setting that can be applied during editing.

The SuperView Digital Lens and 4K 4:3 aspect ratio video settings should be hitting units of the Hero from now via updates to the GoPro and GoPro Quik apps respectively.
