Aug 18, 2025 07:07 PM GMT update
GitHub's outage lasted longer than initially reported. The company said the original degradation was mitigated by 16:59 UTC, but problems returned soon after, with API Requests degraded again and sporadic authentication failures affecting users into the evening. GitHub applied further fixes and marked API Requests as fully operational at 19:01 UTC, roughly five and a half hours after the first errors appeared. The original article follows below.
GitHub engineers are having a rough day, with the company's status page confirming error rates of approximately 20% across web and API traffic as of 14:04 UTC on Aug 17. Archive downloads and raw repository content have been hit even harder, with error rates of approximately 50%. Pull requests, Issues, Webhooks, and Actions have all been flagged as degraded since around 13:41 UTC. Downdetector also reports that user complaints began spiking around 13:30 UTC
GitHub hasn't identified a root cause yet, and investigations are ongoing.
We'll update this piece as GitHub posts further status updates.
