Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Hamaguchi may be working on Final Fantasy 17

Square Enix hasn’t announced Final Fantasy 17, but speculation is growing about who will lead the project. During a Final Fantasy 14 event, producer and director Naoki Yoshida welcomed Naoki Hamaguchi to the stage. A reaction to a question may suggest that the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation boss has a role in the next mainline entry.

A revealing exchange?

Yoshida was discussing the upcoming FF14 Evercold expansion and a collaboration raid with FF7. On social media, aitaikimochi described how he praised his co-worker:

I think it's one of the biggest compliments people were saying in the comments they wish Hamaguchi is making FF17. But you don't have to answer...!

Hamaguchi then stopped himself from replying, which Yoshida agreed was a wise decision. Yet, the reaction of the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director has sparked discussion among fans of the RPG series.

The 17th mainline addition remains a mystery even if many gamers believe it’s already in production. If that’s the case, it may cast doubt on Hamaguchi’s influence. The Square Enix veteran has been consumed by part 3 after completing the first two titles in the popular remake series.

Even with strong project management skills, Hamaguchi might struggle to juggle the games. As a result, this scenario could mean that the Final Fantasy 17 release date is further away than anticipated. Instead of revisiting existing titles, it will require creating a unique world and writing an original narrative.

Square Enix could pick a rising star

Final Fantasy 16 producer Yoshida did provide clues about its follow-up. In an early 2024 IGN interview, he hinted that an unexpected candidate would take the reins, saying “maybe it's time for someone new.” That likely rules out Hiroshi Takai or himself as director, and complicates any prediction.

Meanwhile, Hamaguchi has stated that following Revelation, he wants to tackle a new JRPG. He didn’t rule out an original Final Fantasy game, but could also be referring to a unique IP.

Whoever is in charge, Square Enix hopes for stronger long-term sales after the Final Fantasy 17 release date. A multi-platform debut is one way to boost performance compared to its initially PS5 exclusive predecessor.
