Fairphone unveils Fairbuds 2 with replaceable battery, Sony LDAC and ANC

Fairphone is adding updated Fairbuds to its lineup alongside the Fairbuds XL. The Fairbuds 2 are 37 percent smaller than their direct predecessors ($99 on Amazon), and the charging case is also 32 percent smaller. Nevertheless, the batteries in both earbuds and in the case can be replaced in just a few minutes. New dynamic biocellulose drivers measuring 11 millimeters in diameter promise better sound.
The sound can be personalized via an equalizer in the companion smartphone app. The modern Bluetooth 6.0 chip is also intended to contribute to the improved sound, as it supports LC3 and the Sony LDAC hi-fi codec in addition to SBC and AAC. Three microphones per earbud enable active noise cancellation (ANC). Fairphone advertises a battery life of six hours of music playback with ANC, eight hours without noise cancellation, or up to 40 hours with the charging case.
Bluetooth Multipoint allows the earbuds to be paired with up to six devices simultaneously. Despite their repairable design, the earbuds are IP54-certified and therefore protected against water splashes. In typical Fairphone fashion, the Fairbuds 2 are designed to be not only durable but also sustainable. 49 percent of the materials used come from recycled sources and were produced under fair working conditions. The earbuds are e-waste-neutral through a recycling program.
Pricing and availability
The Fairbuds 2 will launch in the U.S. on November 2nd for $119. They are already available in the UK for £99 and in Europe for €119 from Fairphone's online shop.
