As Apple announced at WWDC 2024 the company plans to collaborate with OpenAI to improve Siri by integrating ChatGPT. The function known as "Apple Intelligence" is to be implemented later this year with iOS 18.
Elon Musk then voiced harsh criticism of Apple's plans on X (formerly Twitter). He even threatened to ban all Apple devices from his companies Tesla and SpaceX:
If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation.

Musk added that visitors would have to leave their Apple devices at the door and keep them in a Faraday cage to prevent any communication. Musk argues that the integration of OpenAI into Apple devices poses a significant security risk, particularly in terms of data integrity and security.

The reactions to Musk's tweets are mixed. Some users are calling for a "Teslaphone" or "X-Phone", while others are calling Musk a hypocrite and criticizing his own data protection practices, especially in connection with the transfer of data to an Israeli company for Twitter verifications.
Musk's tensions with OpenAI are not new. He was one of the company's co-founders, but stepped down from the board in 2018 and has since raised concerns about OpenAI's business strategy several times, including a breach of contract lawsuit. Tim Cook and other senior Apple executives have not commented on Musk's threats.
