DLSS Multi-Frame Generation is now available on RTX 3000 series GPUs thanks to modders

Modders have seemingly unlocked DLSS Multi-Frame Generation for RTX 3000 “Ampere”-based GPUs. This achievement casts doubt on NVIDIA’s repeated claim that the feature was exclusive to the RTX 5000 “Blackwell” series because of its hardware requirements.

Since the DLSS 5 DLL file leaked with NBA 2K27, the unofficial DLSS modding community seems to have opened the floodgates to new possibilities. Modders first implemented DLSS 5 in other games by swapping files, which delivered terrible out-of-the-box performance, mostly because it lacked driver support. However, things changed when Nvidia released GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.64; DLSS 5 gained official hardware support and was successfully implemented in most titles, though performance still varies widely.

New mods and developments involving DLSS on both older and newer RTX GPUs have been popping up left and right over the past few weeks. From implementing DLSS 5 in unsupported games to achieving Multi-Frame Generation on the RTX 4000 series, modders have set out to prove that Nvidia isn't being honest when it claims newer features aren't available on older cards because of hardware limitations.

Much-needed relief for gamers at a time when GPUs continue to get more expensive

The latest development is a major milestone and definitely breathes new life into systems still running RTX 3000 GPUs. Modders have now found a way to run Multi-Frame Generation on the RTX 3000 GPU lineup. This is incredible since Nvidia itself said RTX 3000 GPUs couldn't handle frame generation. Previously, users who wanted to experience frame generation had to use Nukem9’s DLSS-to-FSR frame-gen mod, which allowed them to combine DLSS upscaling with AMD’s FSR Frame Generation. This option was also natively available in select games.

However, with this new mod, players on aging RTX 3000 series cardsdon't need FSR’s frame-gen technology. The new mod installs a proxy for the RTX 3000 series’ SM86 architecture alongside the game’s executable. It redirects frame-generation requests to a bundled DLSSG 310.1 runtime, which doesn’t interfere with the game’s own files. Players can also configure Multi-Frame Generation to request 2x, 3x, or 4x frame generation, though the in-game setting still governs how many frames are generated.

The project is hosted on GitHub, and the developer’s tests show impressive results. For context, the developer reports that a 3080 Ti running Black Myth: Wukong jumped from 50 FPS to 150 FPS with 4x Frame Generation. Similarly, Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing went from a meager 35 FPS to a massive 100 FPS with 4x Frame Generation. 

These results show that while Multi-Frame Generation works on the RTX 3000 series, it still cannot match the efficiency or performance of the RTX 5000 series because the “Blackwell” GPUs were designed with this technology in mind. The developer also recommends using this mod in single-player games, as anti-cheat software in multiplayer games could flag it, potentially resulting in a ban.
