Corsair’s new $204.99 RM1200e is a fully modular 1200W PSU with PinProtect overcurrent protection, which monitors individual 12V-2x6 connector pins and shuts down the GPU when it detects excessive current. The feature aims to reduce connector damage but does not replace regular inspections, and Corsair has not disclosed its activation thresholds or response times.

Corsair’s RMe PSU series is expanding with the new RM1200e, a 1200W platinum-certified PSU for users building high-end gaming setups. The RM1200e, which replaces its 2025 variant, is also fully modular, making it perfect for DIY builders. However, the RM1200e's highlight is its new method for preventing GPU power connector damage.

The PinProtect overcurrent protection feature

The new PinProtect OCP feature is Corsair’s way of addressing frequent GPU power connector damage, especially with the 12V-2x6 connector required by the latest GPUs. With PinProtect OCP, the PSU will monitor the current drawn on each 12V-2x6 connection pin in real time.

If the current on any pin exceeds the safety threshold, PinProtect will limit power to the GPU and turn it off, leaving users with a black screen. Since PinProtect monitors the current drawn by each pin, it prevents uneven power distribution in the GPU connectors, which often causes damage in the first place.

Corsair has also clarified that PinProtect requires no manual setup or configuration. It is a “plug-and-play” feature, and if PinProtect detects any discrepancies in the current being drawn, it will simply alter the state of the connector’s sense wires to limit the power being drawn by the GPU and turn it off. However, Corsair has not outlined the current safety threshold or how long it takes for PinProtect to activate its procedures.

Prevention is not the cure

The PinProtect OCP certainly seems to be an effective preventive measure on paper. Nevertheless, it is not a complete solution for GPU connector damage, and users are still advised to regularly inspect the connector for any damage, especially after the GPU turns off thanks to PinProtect.

The Corsair RM1200e has the latest ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 certification, and uses Japanese capacitors rated for 105°C in its compact construction. Corsair also claims up to 89% overall efficiency and supports ZERO RPM Mode. The Corsair RM1200e comes in black and white, with an MSRP of $204.99 and a 10-year warranty.
