Compact Freckle Phone promises outdoor adventures instead of TikTok feeds

With the Freckle Phone, a US start-up is introducing an unusual smartphone developed specifically for children. This starts with the design, as the housing, featuring a 3.1-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 720 x 720 pixels, is relatively compact, which should make it much better suited to small children's hands.
The colorful plastic body, with an optional protective case and shoulder strap, is designed to withstand bumps and drops better than the glass back of more expensive smartphones. The manufacturer has so far released few technical specifications – the device offers a camera on both the front and back, a 2,600 mAh battery, a USB-C port, as well as speakers and microphones. Besides its design, the software is the Freckle Phone's most distinctive feature, as ClayOS focuses on outdoor adventures rather than social networks.
For example, children can take photos of objects with the camera and receive information about them with the help of artificial intelligence. Quests, which can be customized by parents, send children on adventures through forests and cities. A walkie-talkie app connects two Freckle Phones simply by tapping them together. A music player, a map app and a chat app are also included in the feature set. Parents can disable individual apps and locate their child's Freckle Phone.
Pricing and availability
The Freckle Phone can now be preordered from the manufacturer's online store but will initially only be shipped to customers in the USA. Shipping is expected to begin in December 2026. The smartphone costs $199, and using it requires a mobile plan costing $25 per month, purchased directly from the manufacturer.
