After the Apple M4 made its debut in the iPad Pro in the first half of the year, the chip is now also available in the Mac mini, iMac and MacBook Pro. According to the latest information from Bloomberg, the next-generation MacBook Air will soon follow, as the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with Apple M4 are said to be "deep in mass production".
This means that sales are likely to start in the first quarter, i.e., by the end of March. A Mac Studio with a high-end version of the Apple M4 will finally be launched in the middle of next year, followed by a new Mac Pro. As our benchmarks of the Apple M4 in the iPad Pro show, the chip achieves up to 22% faster CPU performance than the Apple M3 in the MacBook Air, even without a fan. However, the switch is only really worthwhile for users of an older Intel Mac or a M1 MacBook Air, as the newer ARM chip is up to 70% faster.
Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman expects the MacBook Pro to get an upgrade to the Apple M5, the M5 Pro and the M5 Max towards the end of 2025, but without the long-awaited redesign. The new design, including the tandem OLED display and 2 nm ARM chip, is currently not expected until 2026, so next year's model will once again be a performance upgrade only. It remains unknown whether other models such as the iMac or the Mac mini will also receive an upgrade to the Apple M5 in 2025.
