Big news: RPCS3 announces a classic Sega PS3 game is now fully "Playable" on PCs

The RPCS3 Sony PlayStation 3 emulator has added another PS3 game to its “Playable” list. The RPCS3 team announced this development on X. The news is quite big, as there are only a few games that RPCS3 can’t properly emulate on PCs. The game we are talking about is Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), also called Sonic ‘06.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was a 2006 reboot of the iconic franchise that debuted on the Sony PS3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360. However, despite bringing 3D levels and multiple playable characters, both old and new, Sonic ‘06 was a disappointment. The game fell flat and was hated by both critics and users. As a result, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) stands at a 46 on Metacritic, with an equally disappointing 5.3 user score.
That said, RPCS3 being finally able to play the game on PCs serves as a crucial milestone from a game preservation standpoint. The RPCS3 team reported on X that lead developer elad335 fixed a “synchronisation issue in our emulation of the SPU MMIO” by “making the PPU return from an SPU SNR push event at the same time as the SPU wakes up”. With the issue now resolved, the RPCS3 database currently has no known issues plaguing Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
Finally, with Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) now fully playable on PCs, RPCS3’s “Playable” list currently covers 79.95% of the PS3 library. There are now only 27 games (0.73%) in the “Intro” list and 697 games (19.32%) in the “Ingame”. Seeing the pace of development of RPCS3, it won’t be long before the emulator can play over 80% of the PS3 library.
