The Acer Chromebook Plus 514 isn’t the definitive Chromebook to go out and buy tomorrow, but then again, that isn’t the point of a £399.99/$399.99 device. It is instead a laptop designed to offer what most people need for a price that most people would be happy to pay, and while it may not excel in any one area, it remains a respectable all-rounder choice. The quad-core Ryzen 3 7320C processor powers it to decent benchmark results and nippy real-world performance for the productivity tasks this laptop is designed for. What’s more, it’s a good-looking laptop with a sleek silver plastic chassis, while it also offers a plentiful port selection for a laptop at this price. The battery life on offer here is decent for a Chromebook, although we have seen better results with the likes of the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 and the touchscreen Acer Chromebook Spin 514.

But let’s face it: you won’t be too mad with any Chromebook Plus purchase at this point. And that’s the point, right? I can’t say the 514 does anything exceptionally better than the competition, so it really comes down to what’s available at the time of purchase, what the prices are, and where you shop. Being available only at Costco clearly makes this one a bit less popular, but as I’ve said with all these Chromebook Plus models; if you pick one up, I think you’ll like it.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is arguably the best Chromebook most of us should buy right now, thanks to its slimline body, practical 2-in-1 design, high-performance spec, and excellent 16:10 screen. But what if your Chromebook budget doesn't stretch to the £699 required per device? Enter the Acer Chromebook Plus 514. One of the first wave of premium Chromebooks bearing Google's new Plus designation, it gives you a screen of the same size with the same resolution, good working ergonomics, and a capable spec based on AMD's new Ryzen 3 7320C CPU, all for less than two-thirds of what you'd need to spend for the Spin 714. You'll have to abandon any hope of a sleek metallic chassis and a super-bright display, but if you're trying to cut your IT costs, you need to make some sacrifices somewhere. With the Acer Chromebook Plus 514, you're making them in mostly the right places.

A solid, decent performer, with the Chromebook Plus label attached that ensures a certain level of quality. While it can't match the premium-level Chromebooks out there, the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 offers great value for money for office work and student use.

Positive: Decent autonomy; good price; beautiful design. Negative: Poor display; mediocre touchpad.

Just about all the Acer Chromebooks -- from basic to premium -- I've tested over the years are recommendable, and the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (CB514-4H/T) is no different. It meets all the requirements to be stamped as a Chromebook Plus model, and it delivers good performance and even better battery life. It has a respectably bright display with a matte finish to limit glare. And it has more storage than you'd typically find at its $350 starting price. It's a simple, sturdy Chromebook for school, work or home. And, once again, it's easy to recommend.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

78.63%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
