Intel Core i5-5350H vs Intel Core i5-4330M vs Intel Core i5-4310U

Intel Core i5-5350H

► remove from comparison Intel 5350H

The Intel Core i5-5350H is a fast dual-core processor based on the Broadwell architecture, which has been launched in June 2015. In addition to two CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 3.0 - 3.5 GHz (2 Cores: 3.5 GHz as well), the chip also integrates an Iris Pro Graphics 6200 GPU with on-package eDRAM and a dual-channel LPDDR3-1866/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The Core i5 is manufactured in a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors.

Architecture

Broadwell represents the "Tick" in Intel's Tick-Tock model, which means a shrink of its predecessor Haswell. The new 14 nm manufacturing process with three-dimensional FinFET transistors allows not only improvements in energy efficiency, but also a significantly smaller die size fit for more compact packages and devices.

Further advantages result from the revised microarchitecture of Broadwell. Due to its improved branch prediction, bigger buffer sizes (1500 instead of 1000 entries in the L2 TLB) and other tweaks, the performance per clock has been increased by more than 5 percent over its predecessor. There are also some new instruction set extensions designed for cryptographic applications.

Performance

Thanks to its improved architecture, the Core i5-5350H offers a performance similar to the Haswell-based Core i7-4610M (3.0 - 3.7 GHz) and is one of the fastest dual-core CPUs in mid-2015. Thus, the CPU has sufficient power even for demanding applications and multitasking.

Graphics

The integrated Iris Pro Graphics 6200 (GT3e) offers 48 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 300 - 1050 MHz, which can access 128 MB of dedicated eDRAM memory. For an integrated graphics solution, the Iris Pro Graphics 6200 achieves remarkable performance levels and competes with low-end or mid-range graphics cards such as the GeForce 940M. Nevertheless, demanding games as of 2015 will be playable only in low or medium settings.

Broadwell is the first Intel chip to fully support DirectX 11.2 as well as OpenCL 1.3/2.0 and OpenGL 4.3. Video will output natively via DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a. However, the new HDMI 2.0 standard is not supported.

Power Consumption

The i5-5350H is rated at a TDP of 47 W including the graphics card, memory controller and VRMs. However, power consumption in CPU-only workloads will be significantly lower. Overall, the CPU is best suited for laptops 15-inches or greater.

Intel Core i5-4330M

► remove from comparison Intel 4330M

The Intel Core i5-4330M is a fast dual-core processor for laptops launched in Q2 2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.8 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.5 GHz  for 1 active core or 3.4 GHz for 2 active cores.

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

Due to these changes, the performance per clock has been improved by almost 10 percent compared to Ivy Bridge. Therefore, the i5-4330M is slightly faster than the former top model i7-3540M.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 400 MHz up to 1250 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it about 30 % faster than a similarly clocked HD 4000.

The i5-4330M is rated at a TDP of 37 W including the graphics card, memory controller and VRMs. Therefore, the CPU is suited for laptops 14-inches or greater.

Intel Core i5-4310U

► remove from comparison Intel 4310U

The Intel Core i5-4310U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks launched in Fall 2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.0 GHz, but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz for 1 active core or 2.7 GHz for 2 active cores.

Architecture

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving performance per clock by 5 - 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

Performance

Compared to the Core i5-4300U, the 4310U is clocked just 100 MHz higher and therefore only slightly faster. Overall, the performance is similar to the Ivy Bridge-based Core i7-3537U (may vary depending on the actual Turbo clocks). Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for all office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications.

Graphics

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 1100 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it clearly faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 at similar clock speeds. However, the HD 4400 is sligthly slower than the HD 5000 found on a number of other Haswell ULV models and performs similar to a dedicated Radeon HD 7550M.

Power Consumption

The i5-4310U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including the graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset. Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.
