Intel Core i5-3230M vs Intel Core i3-10110Y vs Intel Core i5-3339Y
Intel Core i5-3230M
► remove from comparisonThe Intel Core i5-3230M is a fast dual-core processor for laptops based on the Ivy Bridge architecture. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.6 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.2 GHz (for 1 active core). As its Sandy-Bridge-based predecessors, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.
Ivy Bridge is an enhanced die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm (versus 32nm Sandy Bridge CPUs) and are the first to introduce 3D transistors for increased energy efficiency when compared to similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processors. Other new features are integrated PCI Express 3.0 and DDR3(L)-1600 support.
The performance of the Core i5-3230M is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to the architectural improvements. As a result, overall performance is similar to the old i7-2620M.
The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 offers 16 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 650 MHz up to 1150 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it one of the faster variants.
Just like most other Ivy Bridge dual-cores, the i5-3230M is rated at a TDP of 35 W. Therefore, even smaller laptops can use the Core i5.
Intel Core i3-10110Y
► remove from comparisonThe Intel Core i3-10110Y is an extremely power efficient dual-core SoC for small laptops and tablets that was announced in August 2019. The faster models, like the Core i5-10310Y offer two additional cores however.
Performance
While we have not tested a single system built around the 10110Y as of August 2023, we have tested at least one laptop utilizing the 10100Y, an insignificantly slower chip (Amber Lake, 2 cores, 4 threads, up to 3.9 GHz.) Based on that, expect the 10110Y to be noticeably faster than the AMD 3050e. Performance of this kind is totally sufficient for basic day-to-day activities, as of late 2022.
Your mileage may vary depending on how high the CPU power limits are.
The integrated graphics adapter however is still the same as in the previous generations. It should be still called Intel UHD Graphics 615 and runs at 300 - 1000 MHz in the i3. Furthermore, the SoC integrates a VP9 and H.265 de- and encoder.
The TDP is specified at 7 Watts but can be varied from 5.5 to 9 Watt from the manufacturer (cTDP up/down) resulting in different performance (especially Turbo durations). Interestingly, the faster Core i5-10210Y with two more cores can be configured to lower 4.5 Watt.
Intel Core i5-3339Y
► remove from comparisonThe Intel Core i5-3339Y is an ULV-processor for ultrabooks and tablets based on the Ivy Bridge architecture. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.5 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 1.8 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 2.0 GHz (for 1 active core). As other dual core Core i5, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.
The performance of the Core i5-3339Y is limited by the very low TDP. Nevertheless, the 3339Y is still a bit faster than the Core i3-3217U with a slightly higher TDP.
The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 offers 16 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 350 MHz up to 850 MHz with Turbo Boost, delivering a performance comparable with an AMD Radeon HD 6520G.
The 3339Y is rated at a TDP of 13 W including graphics card and memory controller. If necessary, the TDP can be set to an even lower value of 10 W (cTDP Down). Therefore, the CPU is suited for tablets and ultrabooks.
