Xiaomi's next mid-range smartphone may arrive as soon as tomorrow, according to new information posted online. The Redmi K30 series will also be 5G capable, throwing up questions about the SoC that will underpin the smartphones. The K20 series successors will sport a radically different design too, along with a new high-resolution Sony camera sensor.
Updated: New marketing photos confirm fingerprint scanner question and confirm launch date. Two Redmi-branded smart devices have been teased too.

There has been a lot of buzz around the Redmi K30 series lately, with rumours circulating that Xiaomi could include a dizzying cocktail of hardware in its next mid-range smartphone. Now, a marketing picture of the back of the device has appeared online, which states that there will be a 5G version of the K30.

This tallies with previous rumours and may put to bed the notion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 powering the K30 series too. While images have suggested that the regular K30 would feature the same processor as its predecessor, the Snapdragon 730 does not include a 5G modem. The 5G-capable MediaTek Dimensity 1000 could be used instead, as Xiaomi CEO Lu Weibing hinted at earlier this month. Different SoCs powered the K20 and K20 Pro though, so we would not rule out the possibility of that happening again with the K30 series. If Xiaomi opts for Qualcomm in the K30 series instead of MediaTek, then it would likely use the Snapdragon 855 Plus, which has a 5G modem.

Incidentally, the design of the back of the K30 is dividing opinion. The rear-facing camera array and Mate 30-esque mirrored ring surrounding are proving contentious online, with some Xiaomi fans already voicing their disapproval of its design. The K30 in today's picture matches that revealed in another marketing image released last week, with both featuring the same curved purple back panel and quad rear-facing camera array.

Multiple reports state that the K30 series will be the first to debut the Sony IMX686 too. The 60 MP sensor will succeed the IMX586, a popular 48 MP camera sensor found in many smartphones released this year. We should point out that companies have implemented the IMX586 in several ways, as we found out in our IMX586 comparison review earlier this year. Hence, the photo quality of the K30 series will not necessarily reflect that of other smartphones equipped with an IMX686.

Xiaomi may launch the Redmi K30 series as early as tomorrow too, if the marketing image that leaked today is to be believed. We have yet to see official confirmation of this, though.

Update & Correction

New marketing images, brought to our attention by XDA Developers, have confirmed that the K30 series will have side-mounted fingerprint scanners. The presence of a side-mounted rather than under-screen scanner had been hinted at previously.

These new images have also clarified that Xiaomi will launch the K30 series on December 10, instead of today as we initially thought. Xiaomi will unveil the series from 14:00 next Tuesday, which we assume is Beijing time. We have no other details about the launch or where it will be hosted for the time being.

It seems that Xiaomi will launch two other devices alongside the K30 series too. As the photos below demonstrate, the Chinese company has an AC2100 router and a smart speaker in the works.
