WhatsApp has stepped up its video calling game by introducing new features. The Meta-owned platform is adding a speaker spotlight, allowing more participants to be added, and offering the ability to share the screen with audio. With these, Meta aims to better compete with competitors such as Apple FaceTime, Google Meet, and Zoom.

WhatsApp is making its video calling option more feature-packed to better compete with Apple FaceTime, Zoom, and Google Meet. The platform has added the ability to add more participants, spotlight a speaker, and share the screen. These are some of the features that are already available in competitors' solutions.

The extended participant count allows you to add up to 32 people on a video call. Previously, WhatsApp limited it to just eight people, and this is the first time the platform has allowed more than eight people to be on the same video call.

As for the screen-sharing feature, it allows audio to be shared with the content. So, it can be handy for watching videos or movies together. It could also make presentations easier. Moving to the speaker spotlight feature, in a group video call, the one talking will move to the first in the row of the participants. The picture will be highlighted, making it easier to identify who is talking.

Besides these, WhatsApp highlights the switch to MLow codec, which aims to deliver a better calling experience. With the new compression, there should be better echo and noise cancellation. This could lead to clearer calls even in noisy environments.

Moreover, video calls on WhatsApp will now have a higher resolution. Of course, to get the most out of this, your network needs to be fast enough.
