Tesla recalls 3,878 Cybertrucks as road safety authority orders repairs
Since the Tesla Cybertruck's release, many early owners have put the e-pickup through its paces, sharing their experiences on social media channels like YouTube and Reddit. Some of the shortcomings of the hyped vehicle have come to light, such as the surface that rusts more quickly than expected, the relatively short range and the difficulty of driving off-road.
Although some of the minor flaws are not unusual for a new release and can probably be easily fixed with a few simple steps in the workshop or special updates, many people's expectations were certainly much higher given the purchase price.
However, the new problem no longer affects just a few individual vehicles, but thousands. As the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today, Tesla is now recalling 3,878 Cybertrucks due to an issue with the gas pedals, as this time the fault cannot be fixed by a simple update. Tesla shares fell 2.44% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
The gas pedal needs to be repaired, as otherwise the accelerator pedal pad may dislodge and become trapped by the interior trim. A stuck accelerator pedal could cause the car to speed up unintentionally, increasing the risk of an accident.
Tesla's customer service will do the replacement or repair free of charge. However, as a recent repair by the service centre shows, this has not been done very elegantly, as a rivet which is not even centred is supposed to solve the problem.
This may be functional, but on a car in the upper price bracket one would have expected a little more effort to be made in favour of the appearance. Nevertheless, this is probably only a temporary solution. According to the comments on Reddit, some owners of the Cybertruck are understandably hoping for a more comprehensive redesign.
