Tesla nixes Supercharger network expansion in New York as Elon Musk promises to finish some sites

Tesla may be rehiring a part of its Supercharger expansion team back, but some of its scheduled locations may never be built.

Tesla seemingly won the government's nationwide EV charging network subsidy race with its uncanny ability to build its Superchargers cheaper and faster than anybody else.

Its competitive charger rollout advantage had gotten to a point where its piles cost up to 70% cheaper to build than the closest competitor, and it now takes Tesla just 4 days to get a Supercharger station up with prefabs from the Buffalo, NY factory.

Until this week, that is, when Elon Musk nixed the whole team responsible for the Supercharger network buildout, expansion, and licensing, in a mad cost-cutting dash.

"Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations," clarified Elon Musk.

He also tried to calm everyone's spirits with another post that answered worries about one particular planned Supercharger location in Kalispell, MT, which has been a Q1 2023 Supercharger Voting Winner, and was scheduled to open this year.

"It’s definitely going to open," claims Elon, and tips that "sites under construction will be completed, and we will add additional Superchargers anywhere where there are gaps."

This statement, however, somewhat contradicts his previous post about a slower pace of expansion. Since there are so many planned locations already lined up, Tesla is reportedly going to rehire part of the Supercharger team it just dismissed to work on installation and upkeep.

Multiple companies which work with Tesla on planned Supercharger sites, however, report that it has gone incommunicado about its future plans, and their emails now bounce back.

Also, several of the scheduled Supercharger locations in New York are apparently not going to be built at all, an insider source reports.

The two Supercharger sites in Maspeth, as well as those in South Bronx, South Brooklyn, and College Point, Queens, have indeed been cancelled now, despite the Supercharger network congestion in New York on account of all the ride-hailing services there.
