SpaceX just unveiled its new space suit for Extravehicular Activity that could be scaled up for Moon and Mars missions.

The astronaut crew in the Polaris Dawn private space mission that will be carried out in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule will have a brand-new suit to use during the first commercial spacewalk.

SpaceX calls it the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) spacesuit and has invented it with practicality and scalability in mind.

The thin and light spacewalking suit features a helmet equipped with Heads-Up Display projector similar to car windshield HUDs and is designed for freedom of movement.

According to SpaceX, its planned Moon Base and Mars colonization missions "will require millions of spacesuits," so the EVA is crafted with the idea to be produced in greater numbers.

It seems that the new suit will be used by the Polaris Dawn astronauts during both the Crew Dragon capsule launch or landing, and for the actual spacewalk.

SpaceX will use the crew's venture in open space to test how the EVA suit will behave to gauge its "scalable design" practicality towards a future with "spacesuits on future long-duration missions as life becomes multiplanetary."

"Evolved from the Intravehicular Activity (IVA) suit, the EVA suit provides greater mobility, a state-of-the-art helmet Heads-Up Display (HUD) and camera, new thermal management textiles, and materials borrowed from Falcon’s interstage and Dragon’s trunk," informs SpaceX.
