Nintendo will not take part in gamescom 2024 "after careful consideration"
Gamescom 2024 is fast approaching, and fans are eagerly anticipating the list of exhibitors. It's not uncommon for major manufacturers, developers, or publishers to skip the event. Last year, for instance, stands from Sony and THQ Nordic were notably absent. This year, it appears that Nintendo fans will be disappointed.
Nintendo had previously paused its participation at gamescom from 2020 to 2022. While the first two events during the COVID-19 pandemic were held exclusively online, exhibitors were able to participate physically in 2022. However, Nintendo did not attend any of these events. The Japanese console manufacturer made its comeback in 2023 with a relatively large stand. Despite this, Nintendo has already confirmed their absence for 2024. When asked by GamesWirtschaft magazine, a company spokesperson responded as follows:
"Gamescom is a key event in the event calendar for Nintendo. However, after careful consideration, we have decided against participating in Cologne this year. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch at other events throughout Germany."
Nintendo did not provide a specific reason for their cancellation. Nevertheless, fans will have the opportunity to try out new Switch games, such as "Paper Mario: The Legend of the Aeon Gate," at other events. The timing and venue for the unveiling of the anticipated Switch successor remain uncertain. Nintendo could opt for internal events. Recently, the company postponed the launch of this new console to early 2025 to ensure a broader range of games and to prevent a shortage.
