Nintendo Switch 2 engine to support 240 Hz according to new leak and could offer 40 FPS/120 Hz mode
There are already rumors that the Nintendo Switch successor will have a 120 Hz OLED display. According to the well-known Nintedo dataminer OatmealDome, who is also known for his work on the GameCube and Wii emulator DolphiniOS for iOS devices, the NintendoWare Bezel Engine will even support 240 Hz. The dataminer announced this on May 2 on X (formerly Twitter):

The latest version of the engine appears to support higher frame rates like 240fps? (The Switch can only output 60 fps.)
This only applies to games that enable the variable frame rate mode.
Not sure if the older engine versions also support this. pic.twitter.com/5kzm8aM8wx
OatmealDome has discovered an indication in the latest version of the NintendoWare Bezel Engine, which is used for the development of Nintendo Switch games, that it supports frame rates of up to 240 FPS. The current Switch (available on Amazon for $ 295) can only output 60 FPS. It could therefore be that Nintendo is preparing the Switch engine for the next generation - and that significantly higher frame rates will be possible here.
However, it is also possible that NintendoWare Bezel has supported 240 Hz for some time and that this feature is not directly related to the Switch successor expected to released at the end of 2024 or at the beginning of 2025. According to the dataminer themselve, he is not sure whether earlier versions of the engine also offered 240 Hz support.
Of course, the fact that the engine supports 240 Hz does not mean that future games for the Switch successor will also support correspondingly high frame rates. It is also questionable whether the supposed Switch 2 will even be able to output such high frame rates.
240 Hertz probably only possible with reduced resolution
There are rumors that the future Nintendo console will be equipped with the Nvidia Tegra T239 chip and 12 GB of RAM. Although this would make it significantly more powerful than its predecessor, it would probably only be able to display 240 Hz at a greatly reduced resolution. However, the 240 Hz compatibility of the NintendoWare Bezel Engine could open the door to a 40 FPS/120 Hz mode for the Switch successor.
Switch 2 with 40 FPS/120 Hz mode
In 40 FPS/120 Hz modes, the game runs at 40 frames per second while the screen refreshes 120 times per second. Each frame is displayed three times, which can contribute to a smoother visual presentation and make gameplay appear more fluid. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X gamers will already be familiar with this from titles such as Destiny 2, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Doom Eternal and Rainbow Six Siege. With a 240 Hz engine, such a mode would also be possible for the Switch successor.
