New M19 gaming handheld released for under $55 with retro gaming in mind
The M19 is a rather unusual-looking gaming handheld that appears to be from the same company behind last year's M17. Although Retro Handhelds refers to the manufacturer as SJGAM, OWLLON is also mentioned on the associated AliExpress product listing. As such, we suspect that the M19 will be available from other resellers at some point too.
As the images below show, the M19 has an unconventional button layout. For some reason, the company behind the device has decided to place a recessed analogue stick above a d-pad, which sits exceedingly low on the device's front. Additionally, there is ample space around the M19's XYAB buttons. Moreover, the device also has rear-mounted volume buttons, plus two sets of small shoulder buttons like the Powkiddy RGB20SX and its predecessor the Powkiddy RGB20S (curr. $79.95 on Amazon).
Meanwhile, the M19 finds itself with a 3.5-inch display that outputs at 640 x 480 pixels, as well as a 3,000 mAh battery, a USB Type-C port and a Mini HDMI port for image output. Furthermore, the AliExpress listing mentions the device having a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz, which has all the markings of the Rockchip RK3566. Thus, the M19 should be powerful enough to emulate lightweight Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast games, plus most PlayStation 1 titles.
For reference, the gaming handheld comes pre-installed with EmuELEC, a Linux distribution. Currently, the M19 starts at $51.26 with no microSD card pre-installed. Alternatively, the M19 can be purchased with 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB microSD cards for $54.60, $59.92 and $74.56, respectively.
